The instructions say to sew a 7 1/4" strip to the long side of the two 3" and the one 2 1/2" squares, but! the 7 1/4" is too short by 1/4". no way around that. Did the author write it wrong?

Take 3+2.5+3= 8.5 now minus seam allowances sewn on a completed block=7.5

How do I sew a 7 1/4" to 7.5"?! Let me show you my block and Give a link to directions hope someone can help me out.

http://www.modabakeshop.com/2010/11/...uilt.html#more

I lined up sides oposite to show the 1/4" off

You're absolutely right - the instructions don't add up!

Very cute pattern though. I hope that you haven't cut up all your jelly roll yet! You could always square up your block to 7.25 after the fact I guess. It would be easier to just cut the long strips longer if you can.

I hope you let us see how it turns out!

Norene B 11-19-2010 03:11 AM

I would center middle block, sew together then square up block.

Obsessed 11-19-2010 03:12 AM

I just looked in the comments to the pattern and you aren't the only one having this problem!

Dani 11-19-2010 03:14 AM

You are right, it should be 7-1/2"

Isn't this a cute pattern?

QuiltingLee 11-19-2010 03:24 AM

yup cute pattern and I did already cut the first 15 jelly roll pieces. I will just squae it up best I can when i finish the squares. Its going to annoy me sewing skewed though. but nan should be thrilled to get something for Christmas. We usually cant afford anything and it makes me happy to be able to do this :) I'm so happy! I love quilting :)

katier825 11-19-2010 03:40 AM

I've been there so I know how frustrating that can be! I agree that the best way is to square them up to 7-1/4. If you need the quilt larger, either add another border or widen the border. Good luck, keep us posted!

Boxer mom 11-19-2010 03:49 AM

This has happened to me about 3 times now. The pattern directions are wrong, I wonder if they even try making one from there pattern before putting it out to make sure it is correct.

grammyp 11-19-2010 03:51 AM

You are right. I always make a test block for just such a reason.

raptureready 11-19-2010 04:04 AM

When I make quilts I make the blocks then square them all up to the size of the smallest one. As long as they're all the same it doesn't matter what size they are. They could all be 7 3/8" if that's what it works out to.

deema 11-19-2010 04:10 AM

Yeah, the math is definitely wrong. You would think they would have some quality control person testing these things? Anyway, since you already did a lot of the cutting, I'd just square them up the best I could.

lizpatterson1 11-19-2010 04:47 AM

That happened to me with a pattern also, the squares did not align evenly so I saved all the cut material and cut a different material. So now I have two different size lap quilts to do. I know how you feel.

Kitsapquilter 11-19-2010 05:09 AM

You should e-mail whoever put the pattern up on the internet to let them know there is an error. I did that once on a pattern I did and they immediately corrected the error. And thanked me for letting them know.
They would probably appreciate it that someone caught the error they made. It is a pretty quilt. Hope you go ahead with it and make it work for you.

bearisgray 11-19-2010 05:21 AM

After looking at the pattern -

I'm making a couple of assumptions:

1) You are using a jelly roll
2) The strips are 2-1/2 inches wide

If you read all through her directions - it says you will need to trim the strip ends to line it up - after you put each section together - (I do not find that reassuring!)

Rather than try to square the blocks up - I would just cut 1/8 inch off each of the 2-1/2 x 3 inch pieces (then they will be 2-1/2 x 2-7/8- then you will end up with a unit that is approximately 7-1/4 wide by 7-1/2 high

Then you won't need to fight with the strips - assemble it in the way that is illustrated

BMP 11-19-2010 05:27 AM

I have that site saved so I could make that same quilt..someday

Norene B 11-19-2010 05:52 AM

I emailed her and let her know her strips were off.

I had just thought of that and was coming back to post it! haha Yes, instead of trying to square up the blocks and sewing it all screwy, just trim the middle strip 1/8" at each end - takes 1/4 inch off that middle one to match up with the top and bottom strips :)

I like this a lot & will certainly give this one a try sometime soon. Thanks for catching the measurement error & allerting the rest of us so we won't go through the same frustration you had too. "That's what friends are for".

Candace 11-19-2010 07:15 AM

Yikes. I almost started this pattern. I'd be an unhappy camper. But at least it's fixable.

Norene B 11-19-2010 11:42 AM

Just to let you know, I emailed Jamie about the wrong instructions. She emailed me back and said, "Thank you so much Norene! I don't know how three people missed that when proof reading it before! I guess I need to hire you to proof read :)! I fixed the pattern on MBS and I also am attaching a copy in a PDF format!! Thanks again!! If you could please send me your address I'd love to send you a thank you present!!

BMP 11-19-2010 12:21 PM

A present is always a good thing...

grammyj 11-20-2010 11:07 AM

Yes farther down in the comments it said there was a mistake and it should have been 7-1/2

gale 11-20-2010 11:34 AM

I'm glad I saw this because I downloaded the pdf the other day to make someday. thanks op!

gale 11-20-2010 11:35 AM

by the way the pdf download still says 7-1/4". I may just print it and correct it and then delete it from my computer so I don't forget.

irishrose 11-20-2010 11:53 AM

I had the same thing with a quiltshop pattern this week. I will email them, too. Hope mine is as nice as yours.

AngieS 11-20-2010 11:57 AM

I was reading in the comments......

Cindy,
I don't have your email address so I hope you check this!! I corrected the typo in the pattern! It should be 7 1/2"! Thank you for letting us know!

My copy of pdf show correct one. Hmmmmm

Mattee 11-20-2010 12:45 PM

The actual instructions say 7 1/2". The "1/4" hand-drawn on the picture is a typo. This is why I always read the instructions very thoroughly before beginning!

Is that the pdf from the website or the one she sent you? The one at the website says 7-1/4. She probably corrected the pdf but didn't upload it to the site.

bearisgray 11-20-2010 12:56 PM

The typed instructions now say 7-1/2 instead of 7-1/4.

However, the photo with the pieces of fabric still says 7-1/4
(as of 2:56 CDT on Nov 20, 2010)

Holice 11-20-2010 12:57 PM

I couldn't find the 7 1/4 shown in the directions. Reading all the comments I note that the correction has been made.

gale 11-20-2010 01:52 PM

This is the link to the pdf on the website and when I click on it, it says 7-1/4.
http://www.unitednotions.com/MBS-awesome-lap-quilt.pdf

step 2, 3, 7 and 9.

Norene B 11-20-2010 02:25 PM

OK, I'll let her know. Thanks.

quiltingaz 11-20-2010 02:29 PM

The typed instructions say 7 1/2 but the picture has 7 1/4 written on it. The first is correct as I see it but could have been changed since you first looked.

Norene B 11-20-2010 02:37 PM

The one she changed was on her blog I think. But I sent her link to the one that is still wrong. Thanks.

Norene B 11-20-2010 02:52 PM

Jamie emailed me and said that Moda has to change that one. She has let them know and it will probably get changed on Monday.

twistedsheets 11-20-2010 04:43 PM

I hope you post a picture of yours. Tho it looks like a good tute otherwise. I didnt care for their color choices.

gale 11-20-2010 04:58 PM

I wasn't wild about the colors either. I have several jelly rolls to use up and I think I'll use one with this pattern.

Annz 11-20-2010 09:54 PM

I'm having the same problem with a storm at sea pattern I have already cut and started sewing. To the drawing board I have been and will continue to be.
