Wrong size strips
UGHHHH I was wanting to make a king size log cabin quilt. I looked at a pattern.. (First mistake) I should have looked at a lot of patterns. I cut the strips 1-1/2 " wide. I cut a LOTTTT of them. While I was cutting I thought I would check QB to see if I could get some pointers. Almost all that I have read say to use 2" strips.. Have I jsut made the job double hard by such narrow strips? I want to do it in the Barn Raising pattern. This will be my first Log Cabin. What do you think? Should I start over or jsut make it with these? I am sure i have enough strips cut for 3/4's if not the whole quilt... Thank u for any suggestions...

lots of people use even narrower strips- like 1"---your strips will finish at 1" and will make a beautiful log-cabin quilt- i would not start over- i would use what has been cut- (personally i think the ones with wider strips really loose something special) your blocks will just finish a bit smaller than the pattern you chose & you will need more of them- or you can add extra rounds to make the blocks larger.

I wouldn't start over. A log cabin with strips cut 1.5" wide will be beautiful. If you wanted a different look, you could cut larger strips or smaller strips too. Let me see if I can link to an example of an uneven log cabin quilt:

Almost every log cabin I have made have 1 1/2 inch cut strips.

My first was 1.5" wide strips and it came out just fine. It was easy to work with and I didn't have any problems with the size.

This is a log cabin I made with 1 1/2 inch strips. It's from Judy Martin's log cabin book. I love the look of this quilt.

I've made all my log cabins with 1.5" strips. If it's a scrappy log cabin you'll find that the colors mix better when the strips are smaller. :) You can also make more designs when the blocks are smaller. I make 9" blocks, but you could make any size.

I would carry on with your 1 1/2 inch strips. It will take a little longer but you will get a better effect of the dark and light shading with smaller logs. Remember you can always do your next one with bigger logs if you want.
