Is it wrong ....?
Is it wrong that when I see my husband's freshly laundered shirts hanging there my first thought is: wow, that fabric would make a great quilt! I'm trying not to buy fabric, need a quilt for a boy high school grad, and picture strips of denim blue alternating with bricks of that shirt fabric. I'm not sure he'd even notice - the dear man never gets rid of anything and his closet is stuffed with shirts!
Backing away from the shirts ........ |
You are so right, that would be so tempting!!!!
|
look for ones that have ragged collars or cuffs and use those! he'll probably never notice.
|
Why not ask him if you can use it and tell him you will replace it with a new shirt. If it is not one of his favorites he might just tell you to go ahead and use it.
|
It is called "re purpose"

I just finished cutting up 6 of my husbands - he loves it...now he can go get a new one.

Yep, a quilt I just finished quilting has scraps of my hubby's shirt in it....LOL...I guess we all think that way!!!!
|
I would use new fabric or shirts and just let him keep wearing the old ones. Old shirts will not last as long as new fabric.
|
I used flannel shirts in a rag quilt, and am waiting until I finish a major project to take apart shirts I have in a bag from my dad. I can't wait to use them. They will be put in a speicial quilt, as my dad passed away three years ago..

I have thought those thoughts about different pieces of clothing, and have used different old shirts, dresses and the like when they are past repair.

No - it's not wrong. Is this the pattern? http://store.quilting-warehouse.com/087657.html
I made a brick quilt after watching their show. Did not need a template. Just cut strips at 3 1/2" then sub cut into 6 1/2". Masculine quilt for my son's birthday. He loved it. I used all flannel though. |
If it is wrong, I do it too.

I was working a temp job back in Oct 2011 and one of the co-workers
was going out for a night on the town, so he went and purchased a new shirt and I fell in love with that shirt. I told him it would look better in a quilt than as the shirt it was made for. I changed my mind very fast when he showed me the $150 price tag on the shirt....... told him no way in heck would I spend THAT much for a shirt much less for what would equal LESS than 1 yard of fabric. That was the last time I looked at a shirt and thought "QUILTTTTT" LOL |
This is how I made my first quilt. I made hubby a shirt which I was not pleased with and it hung on the door for a couple of weeks as I tried to work out how to fix it - I had a light bulb moment - why not cut that one shirt up into little shirts and applique them onto blocks for a quilt. I just hate wasting fabric so this is what I did. That quilt is now referred to as "the little shirt quilt". It was made with an hawaiian print fabric and it is one of our favourites.
Go ahead and ask him - he may even offer up another shirt or to for the project. Let us know what happens. |
