I bought a set of X-Block rulers and wonder if anyone has used them and if there are any free patterns out there?
I thought once I had the rulers, I could go online to find patterns but no such luck. All of these simple square rulers with a couple lines on them are so expensive and then you HAVE to buy their books!

Most of the grid rulers have the X's on them for lining things up. NOt sure what these ones are that you are talking about.

It is a specialty ruler with special patterns.

If you bought the x Block ruler new there should be instructions on how to use it. There should also be a website address that shows different patterns to purchase or just to see what you can do with the ruler.

My x Block ruler came with directions. I've not yet used it though.

There was a pattern using the X Block Ruler in the April 2008 issue of "Quilter's World" magazine. It was called "Pick Up Stix." Also there was a pattern in the New Zealand Quilter magazine back a few years ago as well, but that would probably be harder to find.

Yep, I have an Xblock ruler. We used it in making a retreat quilt.

Unfortunately the person direction us on the use of the ruler didn't know enough to be able to accurately tell us how to use it.

I learned more when I went on a Shop Hop and one of the stores was demo-ing it. Main thing I came away with was to iron your seam flat. At the retreat the trimming of the block was awkward because the ruler kept tilting various ways. Had I been told to iron seams flat, and yes I did ask this question for everyone to hear the answer ['whatever you want - it doesn't matter'], I wouldn't have had so many problems squaring up the finished block!

There are lots of pics online. You could also try a QB search.

Here is a link I just found to 2 free patterns:

If you're wanting a book of patterns, I like the book "Once upon a time in X-block land". I made a cute turtle quilt with the rulers, used both small and large size. Here's a link to see it. http://www.quilt-pictures.com/turtles.html
