Yard Sale purchase, good idea?
 

I know quite a few of you have EQ7 but I'm not sure if I would use it a lot or not at all so don't want to spend the $$ until I'm able to try something similar. Was at a yard sale with boxes & boxes of fabric strips & quite a few quilting booklets. Then I saw a gal. bag with a couple of books & what looked like software. Turned out to be EQ3, which I know is a much older version. Would this give me an idea of what the newer programs would be like? I did purchase it & then had 2nd thoughts but figured at $3.00 it couldn't hurt.
What do you think, could it help me decide if I would like this sort of thing? Thanks

I'd say it would be worth playing around with at least. I'm sure you can look up what some of the additions have been to the new versions. At $3 it is worth it even if it just gives you a couple of hours of entertainment. A movie would cost more.

I think EQ3 ran on the DOS operating system. Do you have a really old computer to run it on?

I wouldn't bother. Old versions are not nearly as user-friendly, and you may get discouraged. Best to find a friend who has it, and play around with it while you consider buying a new version.

Thanks for your replies. I have a Dell Windows XP that I purchased used about 2-1/2 yrs ago.

Your computers too new for EQ3 sorry.

1. I agree with the others, you probably won't be able to run it on any computer. The hardware is simply not compatible with the software.

2. I think the changes from EQ3 to EQ7 are radical enough that if you tried out EQ3, liked it, and bought EQ7, it would seem like a totally different program.

3. As an aside..... as you probably know, Microsoft stopped supporting XP. This means there are no anti-virus patches, bug fixes, or updates for it anymore, so be very careful about what you download, open, install, etc.


I put out the word amongst my quilty friends and local quilt shops that I was looking for a used copy of EQ7 for my mom. I found someone willing to sell me hers for a very reasonable price. Check around your area, maybe you'll find a deal too! :thumbup:

I'm not sure, but it sounds like it was released around 1995? You could try it with compatibility mode, I have played games from that era when I still had my XP computer. Though it tends to me hit and miss what will work. I'm not sure what it specifically says about the Operating System needed, but you could also try googling that system + "on XP" or something like that, usually there are plenty of hits of people trying to use old software.

Sounds like though, you'd be better off looking for a copy of EQ7.

I had a version of EQ3 and you really need to run it on Window 98. I am currently running EQ5 on XP and I have no problems. I learn all my basics from that version of EQ so it should at least be some interesting reading.

I have EQ 6 and it is fine. If I learn to use it, then maybe I'll update to EQ 8? :) So far, I haven't mastered all that is in EQ 6. When I feel like I've "got it down', I'll be looking and waiting for the newest version.

So, if you really want it and can't get EQ 7, try EQ 6. It's good. It really is.
