Yardage calculation help
 

Help! My brain is addled. I want to use a 110 wide backing fabric for piecing, however, I need to know how much I need to purchase to equal 3 yards of 44 wide fabric. Can someone tell me what the conversion is on a yard of 110 wide to 44 wide yardage. 2.5 yards?

well 44+44=88+22 more=110. that's a bit over 2.5 yards. if that helps.

3 yards of 44" fabric is 4752 square inches. That would be the same as 43.2" of the 110" wide fabric.

Today, most yardage is 41-42" wide, not 44". I think 1 1/4 yd would be enough.

Yes, buy 1 and 1/4 yards of the 110" backing which will give you exactly 3 yards.

At just a quick glance, since the backing is over twice as wide as the regular width fabric, at the most, you'd use half of what you normally need.

So if you needed 3 yards of 45" (42", 41", etc.) fabric, then half of that is 1.5 yards. However, some did the calculation for you, so you have it. But as a general rule, just think "half as much" is needed--knowing you'd have some left over.

How big is your quilt gonna be? If the longest side is less than 100" this would allow you to place the long side of the top on the backing fabric selvedge to selvedge and have at least 4-5" on each edge, so you would take the short side measurement, add 8 or 10" and buy that amount. If the longest side is longer than 100", you will need to lay the top length-wise, so take the longest measurement, add 8 or 10" and buy that amount. I would probably buy a quarter yard more to allow for straightening
