Yellow Brick Road question.....
 

I have searched, looked and googled... to no avail...to get an answer to one question...so I am hoping the board can once again help me. lol

I ordered the pattern for the Yellow Brick Road...and I see how many fat quarters I would need for the size quilt I need to make... BUT...

How many different colors are used???

When my kids were in school, and I was a manager of a restaurant, we had a worker who also happened to be best friends with my son. Long story short...one day my son called me to ask if he could stay at our house because his mom kicked him out and he is sleeping in his truck.. (16 at the time). My DH and I said yes.. well he ended up living with us for 3 years straight..with his moms permission.. it was never done through the courts..never got paid for it...so he is very special to us...like a son..

I am making this quilt for him for his wedding.. (I am so excited..as he asked us to share being his parents with his moms blessings). Their colors for the wedding is yellow and red... and I was going to make a quilt in their wedding colors until I heard the colors... ha ha ha..but I still want to use this pattern...

I would use at least 3 colors. 5 or 7 is my fave number to use. IMHO i think using an odd number is best design-wise.

Why not use red and yellow? http://www.etsy.com/listing/91796381...d-yellow-quilt This one has lots of orange tones, which I think I would leave out, and maybe add a little black (if the bride approves) or more white. I prefer scrappier quilts, so I would probably go with at least 7 fabrics.

two colors would work but use multiple shades of each color. or even tones and patterns. did you look in the phjoto gallery here? it always helps me.

I agree about the odd numbers. Depending on how big you are making. A variety of prints in different scales looks best IMHO.

I think it calls for 12 colors? I remember I did mine in 6 though. Let me see if I can find a picture... Okay, here is a picture of mine in 6 colors. I looked at the pattern and I did the lap size, which called for 12 fat quarters. I guess that is where I thought it needed 12 colors. I'd say use whatever you want. I am very pleased with mine, and I made it before I had a lot of quilting experience.

I'm watching this thread- because I thought each fat quarter had to be a different fabric.

I made one for my daughter's BD and here is the picture. I use alot of what I had in pinks and purples and lights.[ATTACH=CONFIG]387559[/ATTACH]

The pattern shows a quilt with yellows and blues...so you can do with just 2 colors...just half one color and half the other...and variations of each color..such as 6 reds and 6 yellows....it will work!

I think I made mine with 5 fabrics. I just used two yellows, three blues and a print/white.

I agree with the thought to use multiple shades of the colors you choose, as well as different patterns. It will give more life to the quilt. Congrats on raising 2 great boys!

Yes, you are a special family -- all around! I think that young man will be very appreciative of whatever colors you choose.

I made a YBR quilt all in yellows for my parents, so just one color in different tones will work fine. I think yellow and red would be lovely. Throw in a little cream color if you think it needs something else. To me, black would be too startling a contrast but then I personally prefer lighter colors. Please post when you're done so we can see how it turns out.

I have made yellow brick road twice. Maybe it is not right but I treated it like a scrap quilt and just used whatever fabric I had in a certain shade family (one blue; one green) and added lights. I was very happy with it. Wanted to use up scraps that were left to me from a long (40 years ago) passed away aunt as a sort of tribute and I was a new quilter.

Faye, what a blessing you are! You made a real difference for your son's friend! I love the idea of red and yellow, too....be sure to post a picture when the quilt is done. :)

exactly always use odd and 7 different works great...I'd go ahead and make it with the yellow and red, I think that could be pretty and I bet really special to them!!

I thought red & yellow, yuck!! Until I saw this quilt. I love the colors and the way they were put together.

This is why I have a stash of crayons and graph paper. Maybe cut up small samples of your fabric and play with them?

I, too, like the idea of shades of yellows and reds along with a cream color. I have made two YBR, one a baby quilt, using six fat qrtr prints, and a lap size, using 12 marbled fat qrtrs, 6 were cotton flannel and 6 were 100% cotton; both with minky backing. The latter looked like a neat scrappy, using blues, greens, purple, brown, tan, rust, hot pink (yes, pink) and yellow. I have displayed it in local quilt shows, and many had commented on how well they like it. Did SID on that one. Can't wait to see your final work.

I have never made that pattern but just wanted to say how special I think your whole family is - you and your husband for accepting him and your son for sharing his family with him and looking out for his friend. And that also says a lot about you, that your son was comfortable and confident in his parents to ask you to do this! God bless you all!

The thing is, even tho each FQ is a different fabric in pattern, they can be the same two colors. Those quilts posted show it so well. Even tho all in shades of red and yellow, the differences in fabric designs, shades, size of print, etc. makes all the difference and gives the quilt lots of character and life.

I made this pattern for my mom using her favorite colors pink and green which were the colors she had for her wedding too. I use half green and half pink of different fabrics, and different hues.shades of each, but I don't think you have to use different ones, depending on the size of the quilt you may want to use 2 or 3 repeats of a fabric. The larger the quilt the more number of fqs, and you could just get some yardage and cut from that too. If the couple are still in the same town as you why not have them help in selection of fabric?

With a 2 color scheme of red and yellow, use a variety of those two colors. The more you can mix it up, the better. Otherwise, you run the risk of having the same fabric 'touching' in another block. (ooooo - - can't have that happen!) I did a YBR several years ago and used too few fabrics. I was kind of disappointed in the result.

We'll be anxious to see your finished quilt and see what you decided!

concerning your sons' friend, good for you for taking him in. Sometimes - - - parents and children just don't get along, no matter what you do. No finger-pointing, no blame. It's just the way it is sometimes. Who are we to judge???

I did one just recently in blues and yellows.. each fat quarter had a different print and each had different shades of the colors I used

LOVE Yellow Brick Road pattern. I have used it so many times. Thing to remember that each size larger requires 6 additional FQ's Plus and additional yard of border fabric for each size larger. It's a really easy pattern, one that I share with all Newbies I meet.

I would go with 3 colors using different shades or prints using those colors as the focus

I try to use uneven numbers too. I did make two, two fabric quiltsand they turned out great. Always best to do whatever you like.

I just followed the directions... I believe there were 12 (or 13??) different FQ (for a twin size quilt) I used one color - purple, but in different tints and shades and tones. It needs the variation to get the interest... AND to keep track of all the pieces as your'e rearranging the cut pieces! But well worth it!
