This mag is one of the few that includes pressing directions - a must in my book. Also gives alternative sizes for some patterns - and best of all, alternative color schemes. After 30 years of quilting, I still learn new things by studying the offerings in this magazine, as well as other BH&G publications, including gardening magazines.

vjengels 09-28-2011 05:55 AM

I've had a subscription for years, along with McCalls Quilting, I like them both... the gotta' make list keeps growing!!!!! As far as the 101 quilting tips.... well, there probably are things in there that are helpful to a beginner ( just my opinion...) I didn't bother keeping it, it's just a leaflet anyway. Alot of the tips there are in the magazines every month.

LindaDeeter 09-28-2011 05:58 AM

The older I get, the less I need and I'm finding magazines are falling in that category. I learn more on this QB than I've ever learned from a quilting magazine!

joyce j 09-28-2011 05:59 AM

I got mine the other day also. But decided I would not get it Every one is pushing now for you to buy, I just dont have extra money to get it. would just as soon buy fabric as mag,

j 09-28-2011 06:01 AM

I dislikewhen you order a magazine and pay for it. They still send you mail to order the same magazine and you have to go back and check to see if you already paid for the year. - J

grannypat7925 09-28-2011 06:05 AM

This is one of my favorite magazines.

patdesign 09-28-2011 06:06 AM

Between this one and Mc Calls, it is a toss up for me, I have let all my other subscriptions lapse except these 2.

susieqgc1 09-28-2011 06:14 AM

I subscribe to this, McCalls and McCalls quick quilts. I like all of them basically because I am so color challenged. I just can't seem to be able to coordinate fabrics. I find lately that I really enjoy the McCalls quick quilts. It seems every issue I get there are 2 or 3 quilts that I really like. I guess because they are quick quilts most of them aren't too challenging. I guess the best way is to do as others say and just buy an issue. I know you will come up with the right answer. Good luck

quilter65 09-28-2011 06:22 AM

I think it is a good magazine if you do alot of piecing. They have easy patterns but they don't include alot of applique info which I do. I got the magazine for several years then cancelled my subscription.

I enjoy this magazine and have made several quilts from their patterns. I am a relatively new quilter, I suppose if you have been reading quilting mags for 20 years it is probably harder to find things that seem new and interesting. I like to find ideas from many different sources, including this board, other internet sites, and magazines. My only problem with mags is that I can't stand to get rid of them!:)
I also subscribe to Mc Call's. Like that one, too.

CarrieAnne 09-28-2011 06:26 AM

I really like it. Our library gets it, so I always check it out!

Rose Marie 09-28-2011 06:31 AM

Mags are just eye candy for me since it is not worth the effort to try and find a pattern in them. Im down to 2 now Fons and Porter and McCalls Quilting.
I look forward to getting them in the mail and looking thru them but then they are filed away.
It is irritating to get renewals constantly when they are no where near due. I keep a list in my checkbook showing when I subscribed.

wraez 09-28-2011 06:33 AM

I think it will be a personal decision on your part, if the magazine has the kind of articles and patterns that you like.

I've been getting Quilters Newsletter for a couple of years and ready to give it up. It has lots of what I call 'fancy, difficult' quilts that I like to look at but have no intention of ever making. I like quick, easy and many times scrappy quilts. So the magazine is a waste of money for me.

Ruby the Quilter 09-28-2011 06:35 AM

I only subscribe to one at a time. I wait for a great deal and then subscribe to it. Get stuff all the time that sounds great. I'm like many of you I love looking but there are way too many quilts I want to make so just keep adding to the list

wraez 09-28-2011 06:37 AM

Oh one additional comment. I don't like paying a 1 or 2 yr subscription and only get 6 issues in 1 yr. Just seems so pricey to me, especially when it is only 'eye candy' as someone expressed. I don't have the finances for that.

I prefer finding all the wonderful free patterns online, and what is shared here and other quilt groups.

There are lots of quilt magazines out there but my favorite is American Patchwork and Quilting. I think it is whatever is your quilting taste and style. I have friends who love other quilting magazines! I think you should use your Joann coupon and buy the magazine a few times to see if it is your kind of quilting. Our Joann's has magazines for 10% off so you can't use your coupon but Hancock accepts competitor's coupons and I buy my quilting magazines there. Hope this helps!

Normacharlie 09-28-2011 08:00 AM

I've had all the quilting mags and I find that this one has the easiest to understand patterns. I like Fons and Porters but I don't always understand what they are trying to do and some of the others are the same. This one is by far my favorite.

Normacharlie 09-28-2011 08:01 AM

I agree on Quilters Newsletter. I think most of their stuff is for reallllllly experienced quilters. I like McCalls also.

LindaM49 09-28-2011 08:09 AM

The only Hancock's in our area had moved into the old Ben Franklin Craft store. It didn't even last a year. I was making gingerbread dolls and went there for the first time thinking I would find everything for my dolls. I needed to buy brown felt and they did not have any. To me it looked more like an outlet store. So I went to JoAnn's and found everything. A few months later Hancock was closed. Yet I hear how so many people love their store. Guess we got stuck with a bad one.

Oh...and I know to well about renewing magazines. I subscribed to Rachael Ray's mag. and also NewsMax and before I got my first issue of RR I got a renewal notice. When I got my first issue of NewsMax there was a card enclosed to renew...and both of these were 2 year subscriptions. lol

I decided to go out on the web and check out Amazon's reviews since I DO order stuff from a lot of stuff from them.

7 reviews and 4 people gave it 5 stars, 1 person gave it 4 stars and then 1 gave it 2 and another gave it 1. I was more interested in the 2 low ratings. The person who gave it 1 star said something like just because your grandmother quilted doesn't make you an expert...refering to the editor. She said the editor needs more experience. Then the person that gave it 2 stars said...the projects seemed to be designed more for the high end sewing machines, too much applique' projects, ads
and modern looking patterns. Her review also stated too many beginner projects or seriously complex or way too contemporary. She then commented about an article from a textile designer that wasn't about quilting etc. and said..."BLEH".

All of that above to say that I am looking at all of the papers that came yesterday and I see several things I like just in those.

So...for those who DO have a subscription to this magazine...who do I believe? LOL

The editor is just the editior - I'd go by the designs of the quilts (their appeal and skill level range) and the clarity of the instructions. I have subscribed to this magazine for a decade and it's one of 3 subscriptions I still maintain ... while 7 others went bye-bye.

kycarol 09-28-2011 10:14 AM

'yes,i really like this magazine.no, i don't subscribe.i think it has 6 issues a year.i use 40% off coupon from hobby lobby,and pay about$3.60 an issue.if i flip through it and don't like it ....don't buy !

romanojg 09-28-2011 10:19 AM

Why not go to a bookstore like B&N and see if they have it; buy a cup of coffee and set down and check it out. I'm trying to stick to ebooks and emagazines now so that I can reduce the clutter.

weezie 09-28-2011 12:00 PM

I received the same offer. Nowhere could I find how many issues there are in the year, probably 6, but it doesn't say ... unless I somehow overlooked it. It's a moot point for me, though, because I already have a few hundred magazines and need no more.

one-and-only 09-28-2011 12:33 PM

I threw mine away also. I can find just about anything I want or need on the quilt board. If I can't find it someone else can or will find it. Which I am forever grateful. Thanks!

Marilynsue 09-28-2011 12:47 PM

I've subscribed to this magazine since they first started. No, I don't love every issue but they usually have enough in each one to hold my interest. Even if I don't make a lot of things out of them, I DO love to go back and look at the quilts from time to time. A lot of the stuff is "beyond my expertise" but I can still look!

mucky 09-28-2011 01:16 PM

I too love this magazine and no one likes every pattern that is in one magazine.

MissJMac 09-28-2011 02:56 PM

If you're smart you'll go to the supermarket, quilt shop, Walmart, etc. and purchase a single copy of the magazine (or stand there and leaf through it).
To paraphrase:
Believe none of what they say and half of what you see.
After going thru the mags, decide for yourself if they are what you're looking for.

luce321 09-28-2011 03:17 PM

I also received the offer in the mail and discarded it. There is no way I would even consider purchasing a subscription to any magazine that charges $5.95 for shipping.

sassey 09-28-2011 03:21 PM

I usually go to my library and read the quilt mag Then if there is enough things in it that intrests me I will go buy it

luce321 09-28-2011 03:24 PM

At one time I would use my coupon at JoAnn's and purchase a quilt magazine. No longer can you use the coupon for a magazine, because they always put 10% off. I quess they finally decided that too many customers were doing that. If you bought a mag for say $5.99, you could get 40 or 50% off, that was a good savings. At 10% off would only be approximately .60 cents. What a difference.

Note: Our library has all mags except guilting ones.

quiltwiz 09-28-2011 03:24 PM

I have had a subscription for about 10 years. Love this mag. I have subscribed to ALL of the quilt mags and drop the others after a year or two. American Patchwork has always kept me interested in projects, information, and even ads. I get a lot of info about new fabrics, etc. thru the ads. I am a 30 year quilter and love mostly traditional quilts. This is the mag for me.

mjsylvstr 09-28-2011 03:43 PM

I did not renew.....liked others better.

The one I would like now is Quilting Daily. I look for mags I can learn from now and am doing more art work so this one is more worth my while and money. Also...I have EQ7...don't need but a few mags.

Judy, I think Quilting Daily is the on-line companion to Quilting Arts magazine. Pokey Bolten is the editor of both. Quilting Arts is available in subscription, but I like to buy it in person. Not much of a discount. I think I figured out that you don't get enough off the newsstand price to buy one on the newstand. I really like their Studios mag, but at $14.99 an issue - that's the price of a book & books don't have ads!!!

I agree, I love it, but not every issue is perfect. you can by it at Barns and Noble or local newsstand. try it out.

Yes, 6 issues a year, or fewer if they decide to have a special double issue. That's why I decided not to subscribe.

PKITTY1 09-28-2011 04:16 PM

Alot of the the current magazines offer alot of the same things. BH&G (I do have a 2 year subscription) is like most of the magazines out there. There are a few informative articles. The projects for the last few years (in my opinion) are for quilters who like quick projects...bags, wall hangings, table toppers, and lap quilts. Most of the quilt sizes are not much bigger than 50 square. A pattern that is considered advanced is usually one with applique or alot of pieces. Patterns are usually more modern and focus on using specific fabric lines. You won't find a broken friendship star or other traditional (and sometimes difficult) patterns. I get subscriptions to alot of the magazines and truthfully, I haven't worked on any featured projects in two years. I'm someone who likes a pattern and then, instead of trying to find the specific fabric line to get that look, like to do my own thing. The problem why I haven't made any of the featured projects in two years is that the pattern isn't interesting (made many shooflys, etc..) and I don't want to go buy a fabric line just to do it. If you want to take a look, buy the mag once and see if you like it. You also might find other copies from our board members if you think that one mag isn't representational (some months in any magazine are better than others). The other thing to think about is what do you like and where are you on your quilting odyssey? What do you expect from the magazine for your money? Also, you can go online to AllPeopleQuilt.com and look at the free projects offered. It is the BH&G website. It takes a while to load and navigate but there are many, many free projects. There are also variations of a quilt using different colors and fabric lines...Laura Boentke(mis-spelled definitely) is excellent and is the expert you mentioned in your post. By the way, if you're asking yourself...why does she subscribe if she doesn't do any of the projects and isn't overly happy with the magazine's quality? The answer is that I have collected these quilting magazines for years and I know they go in phases. I keep hoping they will phase back my way. Anyway, good luck :)
