Yippe! Yippee! Yippe! I Got him!

I have a DSIL that never has allowed me to buy or make him a gift. He is not judgemental, he just doesn't want me to spend any money on him. He has been married to my DD for ten years, and in that time the most he has allowed me to do, is share my "extra" Neil Diamond concert ticket with him.
This morning while talking on facetime with DD, I heard her say "put my quilt back!". His response was "no one ever made me one, so I have to steal yours!" (Hers is pink, gold and white, with yellow flannel on the back, sort of princessy looking because I used to call her princess, very girly) After he left for work, I causually asked my daughter what his favorite colors were. She said purple, teal and bright pink. Guess who is getting a quilt this year! Never underestimate the sneakiness of a mother in law! I have even found some bright pink flannel for the back! Pictures to follow!

Brain storm alert!-
(I think I will mail it to him even though they are not far away, that way he can't say no! Lol!)

I totally understand...you have to use all your ways to get info for some and be so secretive to finally get just the right gift...and one they are gonna love...good luck on the quilt and make sure we get to see a picture

Ditzyprints 03-13-2015 02:53 AM

Looking forward to a picture. So glad you can give him a gift! No better gift than one made by hand and no better handmade gift than a quilt, but seeing as how I am a member of a quilt forum, I can't be too objective. He will be so lucky to have his own quilt.

DebraK 03-13-2015 04:29 AM

lol, bright pink? I'm sure he'll love the quilt and your thoughtfulness.

Jeanne S 03-13-2015 05:54 AM

What fun for both of you!!!

Sewnoma 03-13-2015 05:56 AM

That is a pretty unusual set of favorite colors for a man! I think I like him just based on the fact that he's not afraid to like pink! (I can't stand the color, myself, but good for him!)

My DH's favorite color is purple and it's strange how many people react sort of negatively to that.

How fun that you're going to make a sneaky quilt for him! I'm sure he'll be tickled PINK! (LOL, couldn't resist!)

ManiacQuilter2 03-13-2015 06:00 AM

I have known guys like that but never have they had pink as a favorite color. Good for you with your Sherlock Holmes investigating skills. Have fun making it for him. Sounds like a real nice one. I LOVED going to Neil Diamond concerts. So loud you can't hear yourself sing !!

luvstoquilt 03-13-2015 07:12 AM

What a great guy your SIL! Cool he loves pink and admits it..bet he eats Quiche, too! LOL

yngldy 03-13-2015 09:26 AM

You could sneak it over to the house, boxed up as though it had been sent, and that way you do not have to put a return address on the box. Then when he asks you if you sent it, you can play dumb. He can't give it back if he doesn't know where it came from. He really WILL know, as well as you, but he can't SAY you did.

SusanSusan33 03-13-2015 09:35 AM

Sweet!! At first I read it to be sister in law and I was trying to figure out who the "he" was. LOL!!

faykilgore 03-13-2015 10:17 AM

What fun! My SIL was not as reluctant. My DD complained that he was always taking her minkie lap quilt so I made him his own. He loves it and was very grateful.

Pennyhal 03-13-2015 10:53 AM

We are a sneaky lot! It never ceases to amaze me how we figure out how to solve tricky problems. I'm sure he'll love the quilt when he gets it.

quilter2theend 03-13-2015 02:15 PM

Nice idea, I think I'd go with a camo-pink fabric for a guy!

(...thats a good thing in my case, I can't carry a tune in a bucket!)

You are very thoughtful and sneaky - I like that in a person! The bright pink concerns me only because a pink backing is such a large amount of pink. Maybe the pink as an accent on the front and a more sedate backing. Or not.

caspharm 03-13-2015 03:25 PM

Great plan!

I actually know quite a few guys that love purple. My favorite color was blue growing up. I always wonder why people designate colors as being for a certain sex. I think people should be able to like whatever color they want without any negative connotation to it. I purchased a rainbow umbrella once and was given a hard time. I love rainbow colors, continued to use the umbrella anyway LOL

Hooray for you (and hopefully for the SIL).

My husband HATES receiving gifts, unfortunately I like giving them.

One year I found something very special for his birthday. I know him well enough that if I had wrapped it and presented it to him, he would refuse to open it (yes ... REFUSE!).

SO .... I went to his shop and found an empty box that he had received some machine parts in via UPS. I left all the shipping labels on it, knowing he would see the label but not scrutinize the date or anything - he would just see the vendors name as the shipper. I packed his gift and left it at the front door where he usually finds his UPS deliveries.

Great story, and lots of fun! Show us pictures and remind us who it is for.

twinkie 03-14-2015 02:33 AM

Very sneaky but wonderful.

jmoore 03-14-2015 03:18 AM

let the games begin... I bet your creative juices are already working on the perfect quilt for him. Have fun...

Gerbie 03-14-2015 03:22 AM

Great! Be sure to put a label on it. I like the idea yngldy had of sneaking it over to the house maybe you could be there when he opens the box. A solid pink back might be a bit much for a quilt for an adult at least in my opinion-maybe you could make it reversible like a quilt as you go.

I have a quilting buddy that is always doing stuff for me, but never allows me to do anything for her! She's careful to never let slip anything that SHE wants, so it's frustrating trying to return the favors too! But she happened to mention on one of the groups how much she admired all neutral quilts, but had no idea how to go about making one, so I did one for her without her having a clue it was coming! It shocked her, and once it was done, and labeled, she couldn't say no! ROFL! It was soooo much fun getting the drop on her for a change! *snicker*

ctyankee 03-14-2015 04:47 AM

I can't wait to see the completed quilt -- what fun you'll have making it!

Madan 49 -- beautiful quilt!

Texas_Sue 03-14-2015 05:16 AM

Oh, what fun! I always love finding a person that I think really will appreciate something I've made and he sounds like a winner! Have a good time making it for him.

LITTLEOLDME 03-14-2015 07:17 AM

Good timing ,my son in laws all love the quilts I've made them
.

mjhaess 03-14-2015 08:35 AM

He will be shocked....

RedGarnet222 03-14-2015 08:45 AM

My kind of gal! I love to give surprise gifts. It is so much more fun when they don't know it is coming.

cmputerdazed 03-14-2015 09:00 AM

Love it. Can't wait to see what he will get.

JanieH 03-14-2015 10:24 AM

How wonderful you found out and I love his color choices! What a great MIL you are!

bearisgray 03-14-2015 10:28 AM

This thread has me smiling! ;)

sailsablazin 03-14-2015 12:21 PM

Instead of mailing it and taking the chance that it will get lost in the mail even though you are not far away, what about wrapping it up and leaving it in his car when it is finished. Could take him a day or maybe even a week to discover that it is there!!!
Another idea----make him work for it! Make him go on a scavenger hunt....could be a two or three day ordeal! Just let him travel or search all over with lots of MYSTERIOUS clues until he finds it. I would love it more that longer that it takes him to find it..

Bren 03-14-2015 12:31 PM

Years ago before we met my DH found a sale on "white" dress shirts and bought several. Keep in mind he is extremely color blind. Eventually someone in his office said they thought it was neat that such a manly man would wear PINK shirts with his suits! Sure enough they were pink and he continued to wear them. Just one of the many endearing things I love about him. Also, our house is decorated in what some might consider feminine colors and it bothers him not one bit!

Me too. Finally figured it out as darling son-in-law.

IBQUILTIN 03-18-2015 09:52 AM

What a good MIL you are!! He is going to love it. Sounds like he already likes the one you made for your daughter, so his will be a very welcome gift

judykay 03-18-2015 01:50 PM

Love your snarkiness, my friends call me the queen of sneaky as I do things for them right in front of them or buy things when they are with me. My concern would be the mailing as I have read so many horror stories of quilts getting lost or stolen. I like the idea of d e lingering it when he is not home
