I've always believed that "art" is the gift you are born with, "skill" is what you learn, and "craft" is how you combine the two. I consider my quilting a craft.

My brother was an artist who sold his paintings and sculptures, so i never saw myself as an artist. My family tells me that my photography and quilting counts as art because i choose the colors, the compositions etc. So i tell folks i'm a quilter and am silently satisfied that i am also an artist.

I do consider myself an artist as well as a quilter. I'm an artist who's end product is a quilt. I pick the fabrics and put them together in a way that pleases me. My quilts follow the principles of design in a way that is unique to me, and satisfies my creativity.

A painter friend and I had a similar discussion and she told me how much more challenging she finds it to work with pre-printed cloth and making all the patterns work together than just using a solid color that you dream up and use as you wish. A painter is always considered an artist, and a quilter should be too.

If you made it and its quilted you're a quilter no matter how good you are at the process. Of course I do try to do my best work and I also try to challenge myself from time to time, but I always quilt to be creative and have fun. So I don't consider myself an expert, but I love to create with fabric and enjoy the process. So I will use Bubbie's term and put myself in the category of "quilting artist." Thanks for the creative license!

After reading all you have said on this subject I have to ask, what is art? Art is in the eye of the beholder. Go look at all the pictures posted on this board. I think it is some of the most beautiful art I have ever seen. So in my eyes you are all such talented artist and this board is so lucky to have you all so we can see all the beauty you create.

Just as in any occupation, there are levels to being a craftsperson or an artist. I've made quilts off and on for 30+ years (just recently started machine quilting when I got my new Juki TL2010Q) and make almost exclusively bed quilts or baby quilts. I love looking at other people's wall hangings and art quilts, but really have no desire to have them on my walls or to make them. I do love snuggling up under my quilts and do a pretty competent job in making them.

I don't believe that I have ever used a quilt pattern (used many a block pattern, however, made to whatever dimension I am going for in a particular quilt) and sometimes am stumped when I see people mention that they wished a particular quilt pattern came in a different size.

I also knit a lot, spin yarn, and love dyeing fiber and yarn (not cottons, though--too much water and mess for me to get in to). I have fun doing all my crafts and have never worried about whether they were art or craft. They just are.

I am a "fabriholic", with a facination for sewing, any kind of sewing. I have made quilts, dolls, clothing, purses, car accessories, coats, bags, halloween costumes, prom dresses, curtains, drapes, linens, towels, furniture, rugs, and just about anything that can be made from fabric. I never met a piece of fabric I could not bend and cut to my will. Lol! I am more of an artist than craftsman. Done is better than perfect is my mantra! I have never bought any type of pattern that I did not alter to suit me. (Thank you very much Grandma Helen, for sharing your "fabriholism" with me. I miss you every day.<3)

I believe that we are all artist the reason for the statement is that none of us see the same things. I went to a retreat and we all got the same project to create and at the end of the retreat I could not believe the difference in what each of us made. Artist is what we all are we just happen to quilt.
