Are you familiar with Zentangles?

Zentangles. Google it and see what they are.

Yesterday I took my first class creating paisley Zentangles on fabric. The teacher is excellent and I only wish for half the results she has achieved. Her work is magnificent and so detailed. Obviously, she has a great relationship with her sewing machine and demonstrated some of her fillers while explaining the method. She told the class how she approached this project start to finish and provided several sizes of paisley templates to get us started. It takes a lot of practice and although I was using a loaner machine, I did okay. Intimated yes, but trying.

I will be taking a second class tomorrow and hope to learn a lot more.

I have bought a couple of these kinds of books recently....they have tons of ideas for filler spaces on quilts. Definitely something to practice with. Good luck with your second class.

I took a class about two years ago. It was fun during the class but I haven't wanted to do any of it since.

I wish you had posted your project, maybe after tomorrow's class. I also have a couple books, and have actually done I project on the longarm.

I have a friend that has been "Zenning" for about 10 years. It is really interesting. She did the wallpaper in her kitchen. Stunning!

I am a lifelong doodler. I have not tried to transfer that to fabric Zentangles.

Interesting, I stumbled across some of these drawings lately and thought how amazing they would look in the context of a quilt. What is the name of your teacher? I'd be really interested to see if she might be coming to my area to teach. I too would love to see a pic of something you make in class. :)

I did some Zentangle-esque quilting as a background fill on the quilt pictured in this post.

Many of the published tangles translate very nicely into quilting and many don't. It is just a style of doodling and FMQ. There are many quilters out there doing similar styles. Some call it doodle quilting and some call it graffiti quilting. If you google images of zentangle quilting, doodle quilting or graffiti quilting you will get loads of examples.

I had some fun doing this on wholecloth type placemats. A great way to practice fmq, and the small patterns are, in my opinion, easier to do that big ones.

There have been some great threads here about zentangles. Do a search and take a look.
