yes. i have a sandwiched lone star i am terrified to screw up and so it waits...

NO. I look at them as something to look forward to someday as most of the hard work is completed.

I've finished off one friends left over fabric twice now! in spite of having more than my share of UFO's! what is up with that? why can't I say no to fabric?
|
I am trying to finish my UFOs before starting more projects. The problem comes when I'd rather piece than quilt. I have one ready to quilt, one ready to baste, one that needs the back pieced, one ready to assemble, one that just needs embroidery, one that needs a baby name to applique onto it (waiting for the baby) and one that I'm still piecing- have about 15 blocks to piece. I'd like to get all of them to the basted stage, set up for FMQ and just go like the wind. I'd better get a move on!

I finished one yesterday..hurray,

Sometimes I feel guilty because of the cost of fabrics that went into these tops. All of the UFOs are quilts intended to keep. Some are of sentimental value. One is an Underground Railroad top that I did with a class. Another is a top Civil War sampler made with CW reproductions. Another is a tee shirt top made with shirts from vacations and charity walks. So I'd like to get them finished "some day." There is one "in progress" that is being hand quilted which has been "in the hoop" for years. I am soooo sorry that I began this project. It's a stack and whack and I couldn't figure out how to machine quilt it on the DSM. The fabrics were costly and of very good quality. So it's just gotta get done.....someday.

My one and only UFO is a problem because I used Heat and Bond to make the blocks and then tried to hand blanket stitch around the teapots and found that hand sewing through the heavy duty Heat and Bond is difficult and painful. I have one square left to do and then I need to figure out what to do with a quilt with very stiff blocks. Anybody need a wall quilt of funky teapots? lol!

Oh, yes! My UFO's keep jumping into my brain. Occasionally I get them out, try to reorganize and decide what to finish next. Then a family member wants me to sew or alter something, or our retirement facility begs for objects to sell. So, the UFO's are resting, (but shouting my name,) in plastic bins.
And, then, there is my stash! I keep trying to use it up, but I think it is having babies so I never reduce it very much! |
Not too much guilt here because I don't think I have many. Key word "think"...lol but the reason why I am not sure because they are spread in a box or a closet somewhere where I can't see them so don't know about them :D
I do though from time to time dig to see what I have unfinished so I can play with something really quick and see the results of a beautiful quilt. Most of my UFOs would be quilting or finishing the binding (which I hate doing). |
I'm pretty good at ignoring their calling. I vowed to finally finish some of the UFO's this winter. Trying to accomplish something meaningful each week towards that end. Three weeks into January and I'm feeling proud of myself.
|
I am good at ignoring them. Though I am trying to tackle a few more to get them done, and out of the way. :)

I love the challenge of learning a new whatever. i've decided this year I'm going to finish some. Already finished a cathedral windows tabletopper. Working on 2 more. but have decided to partially reorganize my sewing room. first
|
I have a few that don't exactly intimidate, but come close. However, I also want to finish them. It's a conundrum. :)
|
Mine don't yell at me, they sing to me and try to seduce me into working on them.
Unfortunately sometimes other projects just sing a little louder. LOL I'm actually looking forward to this weekend - I get 3 days off and have no plans other than to finish up some UFO's that have been singing very pretty songs to me lately. :) |
I completely agree with JenniePenny (post #18). Well said.

Funny you should ask. I have just about finished by annual reorganization project in my sewing room. I have cataloged UFOs. Some were class projects and not necessarily intended to be finished because I had used unloved fabric so I could learn a technique. Those two went in the scrap bin. One was a DWR that someone else could not complete. I was sure I could and even spent a lot of time disassembling it, pressing and placing sections in plastic bags with labels. The problem was that the choice of fabrics was definitely skewed and hodge-podge. I am sure I will not like it if I do finish it. So it is off the the second hand store. Maybe someone will count it a real find there. There are only six left and I randomly attached a number to each one and will do one each month. If I don't finish by the end of the year they will also go to the scrap bin or the second hand store. I have honestly gotten to a point that I promise to finish what I start. If I take another class I will use fabric I like so I can finish it happily. I think about the money invested and I don't want to see it go to waste. I have a long list of things I want to make and lots of stash and I promise not to let 'myself' defeat my aspirations.

Obviously I'm not terrible guilt ridden about UFO's or there wouldn't be so many. The one UFO I do feel some guilt over is the quilt my sister asked me to help her with for her great -granddaughter, with simple squares, but it had to be a twin. Unfortunately, we did not get a chance to start it when she suddenly passed away, just a couple months after getting to see and hold her GGD. Because it was so difficult for me to even start, she may be in grade school before she gets it. I will say that I finished one twin size quilt, then in my infinite "wisdom" I decided to make another one for the next GGD, yes I'm a glutton for punishment. The second top is done, it just needs to be sandwiched, but before I could do that I had to have shoulder surgery for a torn rotator cuff, which sidelined me. It is definitely going to be done this year, hopefully before summer.

I don't think a quilt is a UFO until it hasn't been worked on for at least 5 years. Sometimes the things I am doing for myself have to be put on a back burner while gifts or other items, like a grandson needing a coat modified to be part of a costume for a comic convention, are completed. Lori Kennedy from the inbox jaunt said hers go in the incubator. I like that. No more UFOs.

I am in no way intimidated by my UFOs! I am a member of the UFO Challenge of the month. So Hah! to my UFOs!!! Their months are limited and they can hear the fat lady sing... well yes, that is me singing, but it's cuz I'm happy to be making progress!!
Right now I am tackling my orphan blocks and turning them into a wildly exciting and colorful fun quilt! |
heck no-sometimes it is giant.I piece for a long time-then I quilt for a long time.
|
Yes, the UFO's were talking to me. As many others, I love to make the tops but don't like the rest. So they sat on a pile that I went through every so often. Then we had a house fire in December and the cleaning people boxed all the UFO's and also my regular sewing things. So until the basement is finished I don't have to listen, because the boxes are piled deep.
|
I mostly just feel guilty about mine- the cost time already used for them, etc. As a new quilter I have only completed 3 quilts so far- included FMQing, so I have way more ufo's than completed ones. I take a lot of classes through my guild, then when I get home I feel I should finish what I was working on before that. I have a medical issue that only allows me to sit and sew for short periods of time, so I already have a shelf full waiting. I have decided 2 ufo's, then 1 new project for this year. I do have an unfinished handbag from the Sewing Expo 6 years ago that DOES haunt me...I MUST finish that so it's off my mind...it's so cute, too!!!
