Your favorite quilt?

What is your favorite type of quilt to make? I enjoy making the old-fashioned quilts. Simple blocks or applique, simple hand quilting. It just makes me think of my southern roots. I admire so much you ladies on here though, that can make the most beautiful quilting patterns and elaborate designs. For myself though, I like the simple old time country quilts. :)

hopetoquilt 02-01-2013 01:40 PM

Love quilts with a solid white in the background.

maryb119 02-01-2013 01:44 PM

I love to make up my own patterns. I get that one of a kind qult that way. I love to work with batiks and 30's print but not together. :)

sak658 02-01-2013 02:26 PM

I love all the vintage quilt patterns..also...

aronel 02-01-2013 02:32 PM

I agree with you totally!! My favorite quilt is a 2 color quilt of red plaid and plain black - which my grandmother made for us out of wool, I couldn't find the wool, but I was able to find regular fabric in those colors - 6.5" blocks alternating. Very simple, but oh so beautiful!

most of the time, I go for easy patterns that look more complex than they are due to the lack of time and space constraints. what I would love to do is more complex designs...I'd love to do a NY Beauty or intricate Mariners Compass. I do like traditional patterns and love beautiful applique, but don't do much applique myself. When I do, it's fusible.

someday, when i get my own sewing room, I will tackle one of the more complicated ones on my list. but because I have to pack them up frequently and put them away, I will continue with less complicated ones for now.

RedGarnet222 02-01-2013 04:02 PM

I have to tell the truth. I love all types of quilts the embroidered ones, the pieced ones and appliqued ones. So far my favorite to piece was the rythum and blues quilt done in tourquoise, black and white. A freebie pattern download from red rooster fabrics. (If you do it, make sure you check the block sizes first! I had to change one of them to fit right and I can't remember which one... sorry) I am thinking it was an error they didn't catch before printing.

I love the burgoune surrounded, hunter's star or crossed canoes quilts done in two colors. Then there is a log cabin, it is still one of my all time favorite to make as well. So all and all I guess to make I like the pieced ones. But, I love seeing the appliqued quilts at the shows.

ontheriver 02-01-2013 08:22 PM

I think my all time favorite is the log cabin. Simple to make but so many design possibilities. I just saw a pic of one today where the center square was a four patch then the logs around it. Totally changed the look. I put it on my to do list.

auntpiggylpn 02-01-2013 09:40 PM

I love a snowball quilt and anything with HSTs!

feline fanatic 02-02-2013 05:28 AM

I seem to be attracted to more complex patterns like mariners compass and Judy Niemeyer patterns. But I like simpler things too as long as they are visually stimulating. I love to have a person look at one of my quilts and say "how'd she do that??" I really love illusion quilts that give the impression of 3D designs but have only made attic windows and tumbling blocks. I have not yet tried the OBW cube designs or the quilts of illusion that look like 9 patch cubes.

Lstew2212 02-02-2013 05:36 AM

I love the calming effect of piecing traditional blocks. I have tried my hand at applique and enjoy it. I want to try my hand at a borgello. I love the designs of so many of the borgello, the way the colors flow. I think if I try a borgello, I am going to buy a kit. I am not experienced enough to pick out the fabric colors to get the flow I want.

kateyb 02-02-2013 06:02 AM

I like the Friendship Star block. When I need a quick quilt but don't want a plain 9 patch I do it. I have found that the design I make the most is kaleidoscope fans quilts. I think I have made about 8 of them. When I started quilting I would have laughed at someone who told me I would like doing fan quilts.

Gail B 02-02-2013 06:23 AM

I love making quilts with applique.

gabeway 02-02-2013 07:13 AM

Love the old fashioned but especially log cabin.

Lori S 02-02-2013 07:14 AM

I love just about every category of quilts... but seem to make more of traditional with cream or white backgrounds.

Gail I LOVE the penguin blocks in your avatar! So adorable!

teacherbailey 02-03-2013 04:37 AM

I love to take traditional patterns and remake them in batiks or other contemporary fabrics. Everything has to be rotary cut and chain-pieced for me due to time.....

nygal 02-03-2013 05:09 AM

It is hard to say which is my favorite style of quilt but I do love Crazy Quilts.

helenquilt 02-03-2013 05:43 AM

I love them all but the Lone Star will always be my favorite.

AnnT 02-03-2013 06:00 AM

I make blocks but I enjoy seeing what everyone else does. I like to try different blocks and just play around with colors and arrangements. I guess I don't really have a favorite!

alisonquilts 02-03-2013 06:04 AM

I love lots of different styles, but keep coming back to landscapes, applique and modern.

I like sampler quilts, cant get bored doing one. Eleanor Burns has several. My favorite is Stars Across America.

linda faye 02-03-2013 07:39 AM

I agree that the traditional blocks make me feel more connected with past generations of quilters. I get very sentimental when I look at quilts my grandmother or great-grandmother have made using only needle, thread, scissors and fabric scraps. I think I would have enjoyed the quilting bees that were held in the 'old days'. Thanks for giving me a moment to reflect.

I guess the log cabin block is my favorite traditional quilt.

My Bucket List of quilts that I want to make is getting longer and longer. I should not have waited until retirement to get serious about quilting. :)

mustangquilts 02-03-2013 07:57 AM

I love all quilts, but love to hand applique because it is something I can do when I work night shifts and when we are traveling. Paper piecing intricate quilt patterns is another favorite. I too love the NYB and Mariners compass. I very, very seldom will do the same quilt twice. Love making each one different. My most favorite are Jan Patek and Kim Diehl quilt patterns.

margie77072 02-03-2013 08:54 AM

I love quilts that are graphic (no flowers, limited number of colors (like black and white), limited number of fabrics (four is the max), one or two different blocks. Having said that, I have seen some really beautiful quilts that ignore my rules...lol. And I love sampler quilts done in a few colors.

sewbizgirl 02-03-2013 08:59 AM

I love the modern fabrics and designs. I don't use patterns, just get inspired by what I see or dream up. I also like lots of white background or prints alternated with whites. One of my favorite modern designs is the Bento Box. Another is anything with a wonky setting.

meanmom 02-03-2013 09:52 AM

All of them. I do find myself drawn to paper piecing. I just completed the 50 fabulous paper pieced stars group on here. I ordered Judy Niemeyers new Mariners Compass pattern yesterday. I have fabrics for a bargello called bright nights bargello. I also find myself drawn to Jaqueline de Jonge but haven't done one of hers yet. I keep finding myself drawn to more and more difficult designs. Some day on of them will probably send me over the edge. I also like a lot of the quilts of illusion.

MargeD 02-03-2013 10:26 AM

I think I would have to say I tend toward more traditional quilts, however, I love batik fabrics and have, hopefully, collected enough batiks in enough colors to make a Boston Commons quilt - saw one on the cover of a quilt magazine years ago, made by Helen Weineman of Heartbeat Quilts, and decided that I have to make it for me. I love making quilts for our family reunions where I pick a color, based on family colors, my family members send fabric, I make the quilt and we raffle it off. My favorite quilt had to be a Dresden Plate that I did with bright blue plates on a white background, all of which happily coordinated as if I had chosen them myself, and which one brother proclaimed was my "best quilt ever", and that was before he won the quilt. LOL. But to me, it's all about the fabrics, as they can make the quilts "sing". I just like making all of them for a variety of reasons.

Appliqué and landscapes

Wanabee Quiltin 02-03-2013 03:33 PM

I love the old fashion quilts too with white everywhere. I buy whites like others buy colors. I do use bright, pastels etc with the whites, but there has to be white in the background. I have many vintage quilts with white backgrounds and I receive so many compliments for them even though I did not make them.
