Does your LQS "hold" fabric for you?
If so, for how long? Do they cut it and set it aside for you, or just set aside the bolt? |

I would think that if you are a regular customer, that they would. There isn't one close to me so can't say from experience.

I believe JoAnns & Wal-Mart only hold fabric for 24 hours, then it goes back on the shelf.

I would have never thought to ask a shop to hold something. I think I would only hold something under special circumstances. If I were a shop owner I would think it would be too easy to get left holding the bag (or fabric in this case).

I think this is something that should be handled on an individual basis. I know the ladies at my quilt shop would gladly hold whatever for me, but I'm in there just about every week. If I was a customer they didn't know well, or know at all, I wouldn't expect them to cut and hold fabric for me. Too easy for people that don't regularly shop there to not come and buy the fabric.
I'm surprised Walmart or Jo-Ann's would cut and hold fabric at all. |
My LQS will hold for a regular customer for about a week, longer depending on how much of a regular you are. They will cut the yardage and set aside. I have seen a few ask for a credit card number in order to "hold" the fabric and charge it as sold the day it is cut , its up to you then to get there to pick up an item you already paid for.
Others that do not "know" me all that well, will tell me anywhere between 24 - 48 hrs. Often when I go in to pick up.. they have the bolt next to or on the counter with a note reverving the amount. So that customers can still see/purchase from the bolt. |

I have done that before :-) There are a couple of stores that I know would do that for me but, in both cases, I am a regular customer who has also bought sewing machines from them. I know my local Jo-Ann stores will hold the bolt for a few hours, but will not cut the fabric ahead of time. |
It has never, nor would it ever, occur to me to ask a store to hold fabric - amazing concept....
I did call JoAnns once and asked them to hold the one remaining machine tote they had - and I picked it up as soon as I could the same day - it's an hour and a half drive for us to get there... Possibly if you had been scouring the 'net for a particular fabric and found a store locally that had it?? Call and say hold it til I get there sort of thing? |
