Your review of electric hot pens for making stencils?

Does anyone have experience making stencils with the electric hot pen designed to melt a line into the stencil? I saw these for sale in a catalog I just got (either Keepsake Quilting or Connecting Threads) and am wondering if it's hard to keep the melted slit an even thickness, etc. If you have one, I'd appreciate any reviews, both good and bad. Or perhaps you've discovered a better way to make a stencil? I once tried the double craft knife with poor results.

I could never get it to work right. Probably user error or needing to practice more. I kept getting blobs of melted plastic so when I used it to trace a design, I would get a wiggle. It has been years, so they may have improved. I don't remember the brand.

Thanks, PaperPrincess. That's what I was afraid of. Too bad. Guess that won't go on my christmas wish list.

I've had the same experience as PaperPrincess. There would be times when the pattern was great but for the other 98% of the time I had blobs of plastic.
