What do you use for batting when making tablecloths or table runners? I was thinking flannel, but does flannel shrink more than batting?? I made my sister a tablecloth using Warm and Natural, she thought it was too thick for a tablecloth. Your thoughts please

I use warm and natural for table toppers and runners.

I made a tablecloth and used just the top and flannel for the back no batting at all, machine quilted it and it came out very nice. Washes beautifully, no shrinking.

I use that really thin stuff, similar to fusible but without the sticky. i get it by the bolt at Joanne's with my coupon.

Fusible fleece or thin batting.

gollytwo 08-03-2011 04:51 AM

the thinnest batt I can find - thermore from Hobbs; it's a poly used for clothing

No Batting for the tablecloths... Very thin non fusible from JoAnns for the runners and placemats.

hobo2000 08-03-2011 06:58 AM

None in my tablecloths or runners.

Another for vote for "no batting" in tablecloths. I do use W&N in the placemats, though. Just to give them a little more body to lay flat.

Thanks everyone. When you don't use anthing for the center layer do you have plain backing.
Thanks everyone

I use the tater bag batting as it is thinner for runners and I iron on light weight fusable facing on the back. I don't use any batting or facing on table cloths as I just hem around the table cloth.

Flannel will work nicely :D prewash and dry twice to preshrink it :D:D:D

Does everyone quilt their tablecloths even when they have no batting? When you have a backing do you make the tablecloth reversible?

nativetexan 08-03-2011 07:37 AM

if you made pieced blocks for the front of the tablecloth, yes i would do some quilting just to make sure they stay together over years of use and washings.
if you use flannel, wash it and dry to shrink it well.

Yes, I quilt, even without batting.

jljack 08-03-2011 08:59 AM

I would certainly pre-shrink any flannel...its just too unpredictable!! But I do like the idea of only the top and a flannel backing without batting. Sometimes the batting is way too think for a table topper, especially if there are lots of seams in the pattern.
