Zig Zag vs Hand stitch binding...?

Hiya, has anyone zig zag stiched binding rather than hand stitch? Thanks.

I often do this on quilts that I expect to be well-loved (aka, dragged around, thrown up on, pooped on, etc). It's quick and easy and I feel it is stronger for these uses.

In the past, I've straight stitched the back and then used a short button hole stitch on the front. It seems sturdy and it looks nice.

I machine stitch my bindings on all the time. I sometimes use a straight stitch in the ditch, but sometimes also use a wavy or other decorative stitch.

I do a decorative or zig zag on most of my utility or charity quilts. Fast and easy, but sometimes the tighter stitching can distort the borders a bit.

I don't mind hand stitching. And no matter what, a zigzag looks like a short cut to me in many instances.

oh, Guess I should have read ahead. I took zigzag to mean simply "zigzag" not some of the decorative stitches. No problem with the fancy stitches at all. Anywhere on a quilt.

I've done both, and I really prefer machine sewing the binding to the front and handstitching to the back. Just my own opinion of course. It's YOUR quilt and you can do it any way you want to.

I had to smile when I read this post. I just finished zigzagging the binding on the quilt I made for my husband. I was not happy with my top stitching. I think that I will go back to attaching the binding to the front and hand stitching the back.
