i'm making a king size quilt top for a friend. and i was thinking about doing a pinwheel and a 9 patch in the top but i have only been making tops for couple of years and not sure if ok to put them together, both of the squares would have camping theme fabric. any input would be greatly appreciated. thank you

Of course it is OK! There are no rules in quilting!!! What is pleasing to your eye is all that matters. Please post a pic when it is complete I would love to see it.

Try to look for similar blocks. What I mean is put a 4 patch with another 4 patch or 8 patch. A pin wheel is a 4 patch and will bisect your 9 patch.

Get out your graph paper and try to draw it out, it doens not match and looks jarring.

A snowball would look great with your 9 patches, you can adjust the angle so that everything comes together, as you want.

I like the idea :D:D:D
Here is a quick work up I did in EQ... I changed the lights around so you could see a couple of different looks
I hope this is the same pinwheel block that you were talking about :D

Anna, could you do that with a snowball and a 9 patch? I came up with that off the top of my head and would like to see how it looks!
