Default Question about silk batting

Is silk batting any better, worse or about the same as w and n ,the 80/20 or cottons. Any info would be great.

silk batting can not be compared to Warm & Natural---they are totally different...warm & natural is a heavy/dense cotton batting- silk batting is light, fluffy, silky ... totally different. there is a large difference between silk & cotton.

I haven't used silk batting in a quilt, only fondled some at a show. As ckcowl says, it's so light and has a wonderful 'hand'. I would love to use it but it would have to be an incredibly special project due to $$.

IMHO the only comparison that can be made between silk batting and W&N or 80/20 is that they are all battings. Kind of like an apple and a banana are both fruit. Many quilters reserve silk batting for quilted garments because of its soft drape and breath-ability.

I have a silk batt from Hobbs that I haven't used yet. The label on most if not all silk batts states that the quilt should be hand washed, so that may limit when you want to use one.

As I understand it the silk batting quilts end up being cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter when compared to W&N.
I wouyld love to make a quilt with silk batting, even if I had to hand wash it.

Thank you Feline Fanatic, that was what I was wondering about the drape and breath-ability.I also learned the silk shrinks more than 5 %, I do know there is a huge difference between cotton and silk. Also, is there much difference in distance when quilting as in inches between quilting, some batting calls for every 4'' or so I am not sure my first question was clear enough, but your reply was very helpful.I was on line and saw the silk batting for sale it was a little higher in price and wondered if it is worth the extra cost. Thanks again for the info.

You could always try Quilters Dream "Dream Orient". It has a blend of silk, bamboo, eucalyptus, and cotton. It has great drape and is my favorite batting to use on longarm.
