How durable is rayon thread? I have been asked to quilt a top that is (to me) a less than lovely quilt. It is to be given to a child. The quilt is expected to be laundered often and receive so rugged use.

Some of the quilt's patches has rose cabbages in the material. I plan to use a rose edge-to-edge when quilting. To make the quilt more beautiful I would like to use a color that will make the quilting pop. Which brings me to my question above:

It is an orange rayon and used for decorative stitching. Is it durable enough to withstand frequent washing if I use a sturdier thread in the bottom? Also, will the color fade over time? I would like for it to hold...but sturdy is my first priority.

Anyone know whether this would work or not?

Just to make sure I'm clear, I plan to quilt with it as my top thread.

Rayon is not a sturdy thread. It used to be used for embroidery all the time, but many have phased it out for poly, because Rayon is not colorfast with bleaching agents and breaks easily. I would not use it to quilt a child's quilt. The only rayon I currently use, is to use up my stash of it and in wallhanging type quilts.

​I have used rayon thread on a wallhanging and it was pretty but not very strong. I wouldn't use it on a bed quilt.

well...disappointed, but glad I asked. I used to embroider some and had this orange that I hoped to use up. Oh well...I'll have to look around for a substitute.

I discovered the hard way the rayon thread does not work well for FMQ on even a shortarm machine. The thread kept breaking no matter what I did. It is best used for machine embroidery. There are some nice poly threads with a nice sheen to it....check out the Superior Threads website for suggestions.
