Default question on pressing seams open

If you want you seams open do you still "set" the seams? To the side?
Seems wrong to do that but thought I better check.
thanks, Linda

I press seams open, but before I press open I set (press) the seams just the way they came off the machine.

That's one of those things, you can do or not. I usually forget to set my seams . . . but do, when I remember. Either way, my seams are usually fine.

generally it is recommended to set your seams as they are sewn- then you can either press them open or to one side or the other- setting the seams sinks them into the fiber & makes them lay evenly- giving a smoother finish regardless of which way you then press them.

I set my seams even when I'm pressing open, seems to work great

I had never heard of this before, but I'm going to start doing it from here on out. Makes sense to me!

I too set my seams regardless of how they're then pressed.

YES! It is always a good sewing/quilting practice to set the seams first.

Yup, I always set mine, too. Makes the whole block more accurate no matter which way you press them after that.

Always. It makes a big difference in how your final project will look (thinking of sewing bags), also your blocks are much easier to work with accurately.
