I've pieced a Turning Twenty quilt. I'll post it if I can. Can I use flannel instead of batting to make it a lightweight cover for our bed? Quilting may only be SITD, not sure yet.

I like Hobbs Thermore for thin, summer quilts. It gives a little more texture to the quilt than flannel, but remains very lightweight. That being said, flannel is perfectly fine to use.

Do you really need any batting? Maybe just the top and whatever backing you choose, which could be flannel.

I personally don't enjoy doing SID but prefer to echo the seam lines. It is much easier for me and I prefer that look if I don't do any more traditional type quilting.

Sure you can use flannel. One advantage is that since it's not going to come apart, it doesn't have to be as closely quilted as some batts.

I prefer Quilters Dream "Request" batting. Its a wonderful, light weight batting. Not too warm for this climate, yet it gives it a great snuggly feel and makes the quilting show up nicely.

I made a "summer qui.lt" last year and did not put anything between the 2 pieces of cotton(top and back). I found that it did not have enought body and seemed to wrinkle easily. The one I am now making I am going to put flannel in the center to give it more body. this was suggested by a LQS owner. Also since the flannel will not come apart like batting then you do not have to quilt very close. In fact I am just going to do only enough SID to hold pieces together.

I think flannel would be a fine choice! I have been making a lot of quilts lately with flannel as batting. They are less bulky when quilting and have a really nice weight to them when finished. An added bonus is that plain old white or off-white flannel is much less expensive than traditional batting (such as warm and white or warm and natural). I do wash and dry (high heat) the flannel before using it as it shrinks quite a bit.

Good recommendations here - have never used flannel but have been considering it for several projects.

Make sure to wash the flannel first as shirnkage could cause some problems. Pretty quilt.
