Default Quilt labels

Hi, I was wondering how do you put a personal label on a quilt when you don't have an embroidery sewing machine. I made quilts for my two young granddaughter 13 & 16 to be given to them when they marry. I asked my sewing machine dealer and she suggested I get a pigment pen and write the message on it, what do you think? Thanks ladies, for any help or suggestions.

I would embroider it on. Not that hard to hand embroider. Use a washable marker write on it then embroider on top of what you've written. you can also (in an inconspicuous spot) like along the interior border do the same thing. Or just make a label and attach it with a decorative hand stitching.

Print it on your computer.

All my labels are hand written with a permant ink pen on muslin. I think it makes it personal, especially for family mmbers and years from now someone might get a kick out of seeing my writing. But, i agree the embrodered labels are lovely.

Isn't there someone on this board that does labels?

You got some good answers - hand embroider or use a permanent marker to make your own label.

I have made lots of different labels over the years- and my favorite is using the Micron Pigma Pens- they are acid free, archival quality ink- do not bleed, fuzz around the edges or fade- come in a good selection of colors and are permanent. I've made a few on the computer using word pad- then printed them onto fabric- which I then sew onto the back of the quilt- I pre-wash fabric with detergent- no fabric softener- press freezer paper to the back of it- cut it to the size of printer paper- then just run it through the printer- the nice thing about these is you can add a picture-- I've printed pictures then printed my label over the top of it- made some pretty custom awesome labels- I set them aside to 'cure' allow the ink to saturate the fibers & dry- then I heat set. there are many fabric markers on the market- but I prefer the micron pigma pens- they do come in a fine or medium point once in a while I write on the back of a quilt but more often I write my label onto fabric (sometimes with fusible on the back) then sew it onto the quilt. there are also premade labels you can buy by the yard which you fill in the blanks with a pigma pen- and joann's carries books of iron on labels which are permanent- you choose the one you want- iron it onto your fabric and again- fill in the blanks with the details- I have 2 of those books- they have 50 different labels in them- cost about $14 I think have a variety of styles, sizes, themes. personally- I don't so much like the embroidered labels I've seen- too heavy/stiff

I'm not too good on the computer, so I just trace a pretty good sized heart onto freezer paper, iron it onto muslin and decorate it with the micron pens . Then I appliqué it to the back of the quilt. Easy, cheap and personal.

I don't normally label my quilts....I know...should be doing this. However, on the odd occasion that I HAVE labeled a quilt, it's been hand-written with permanent marker. Don't have an embroidery machine. Mine will embroider but not overly interesting to me so haven't taken the time to master that feature.

You can use pens on muslin to make a label, print one on your computer, embroider one by hand. I have found some printed label fabric from time to time, and buy a 1/2 yard or so...still have to write on it, but makes a pretty label.
