I agree! Your finished size should be 4 inches. Therefore I would square them up to 4.5 inches so that you have the 1/4 inch on each side of the square to piece them together.

I bought the Quiltmaker's Gift book also and had to find corrections to many patterns. That might help with your math issues. This site has some corrections listed for the book.

Hope it helps!

don't worry. I passed trig first semester but by second semester senior year, I forgot just about all of it. and I graduated in June!! but I agree with everyone else, if that's what the whole quilt is going to be, don't worry about the measurements, just maybe make more squares until it's the size you want it

I never understood any of it. I most likely will never have the correct size, since I can't figure out even why the 7/8.

All these beautiful magic formulas and no one has the same out come. I definitely will not throw stones because 9th grade algebra ate my sack lunch.
The link for the pic isn't working so I don't know if this would work but can you not find your smallest block and trim the others to match like someone else here suggested? Can you not just decide I want the quilt this size, divide by # of block on a horizontal row and on a vertical row?

I'm getting the finished block at 6 3/8. After cutting and sewing the non-diagonal sides together, the diagonal is 6 7/8 as the outer edge as someone else correctly calculated. Then take off 1/2 inch for the seam on both ends of it. That leaves 6 3/8 which does turn out to be between the 6 and 6 1/2 that she states.

They are probably 4". When I want to make triangle from a square, I add 7/8". When I want to make quarter square triangles from a square, I add 1 1/4". But since I've purchased the tucker Trimmer, I always add more and trim down to be really accurate.

LOL!!! Well a picture speaks a thousand words, doesn't it!!

These aren't HSTs, but QSTs. No wonder there was such a problem.

I'm just observing this time; hope you get it figured out. :-D

Oh man, this post is just too much for me. I sympathize with you and your problem, but all the math I've been reading just makes me sick! Literally! Quite frankly I am totally amazed over how quilt designers come up with their designs which I know are based on math, but I prefer to not think about it much. Math is the only part of quilting that I can't stand. I never, but never plan out a design on my own but always need a pattern that tells me how much to buy of this and of that and where to put it - here or there and how big the blocks will be and how big the quilt will be. My poor senior brain is not geared to figure things out like this. In fact it was NEVER geared for this stuff

Maybe a visual would help. She is trying to make the center of the Corn & Beans block. The drawing below is from EQ7. The reason there's an issue with the size is that it should be made from quarter square triangles instead of half square triangles.

The original question was what the correct size of center should be, and that is just a smidge under 6 1/2". The "add 7/8 to the finished size" doesn't apply here because she is not making half square triangles. Hope this helps.
