Default Need a quick answer!

My DGD wants her graduation quilt to be "puffy". I thought I had some high loft poly batting on hand, but all I have is low loft. Also, it's Mountain Mist, which I have discovered I don't like because it is thinner in some places. I wondered if I could combine Warm and White with the low loft Mountain Mist on top? I do have two of the Mountain Mist, and could combine those, but thought the Warm and White might give it more stability. Which would you do? Have any of you combined a poly with a cotton batting? I'm ready to load this on the LA, so need to know shortly. Thanks!

Hi sylviak, I think I've read where Charismah combines different types of batting on the one quilt, maybe send her a PM ?

Good idea, thimble. I'm not getting a "quick" answer and I'm loading the backing now.

I've heard of other people putting in two layers of batting. Seems to me it should work.

I have done it. I have done one layer of Hobbs Poly down with one layer of bamboo batting. But bamboo could easily be substituted with W&N. It does add some extra weight to the quilt and it will be really, really warm. Too warm to use in a hot climate or in the summer in a cold climate. Here is a link to pictures of the quilt I did this way. It is heavily quilted though so the in process pics show a better "poof" factor.

Also Green Fairy does a lot of quilts with two layers of batting:

Put your cotton on first then layer your poly on top.

I know there are quite a few quilters who use 2 layers of battings in their quilts, especially for the ones they're going to enter in shows. I say go for it!

I just finished quilting one like this. You will need to quilt loosely. In other words, not too close together. If to close together may be stiff and not puffy. It will not be as puffy as a store bought comforter. Have fun..

Had storms last night, so it is on the frame and I will be starting the quilting today. Going to do a flower panto in the center part and freehand around the applique in the borders. Just oiled the machine and it is warming up, so should be starting in just a few minutes!
