I am trying to find a book or pattern of some sort on a "quilt as you go". I heard about it, but can't find a book on it. I don't know anything on how to make a quilt as you go. Would like to learn how it's made. Can anyone tell me how it's made or where I could find it?

I tried it and didn't particulary care for it. For one thing, you have to stop your quilting stitches 1" from edge of quilt top. Depending on whether you are machine or hand quilting, this might not work.

This works for me, and I have made several quilts using this method. The piecing pattern has to be conducive to the design of having 1/2" connecting strips/sashing. With this method, you can quilt to the very edge of the block.

The "Lucky Stars" quilt and "Are We There Yet?" that I recently posted on the board and that are shown below were both made using this method. Lucky Stars has 12.5" blocks, and the other one is smaller.

For me "quilt as you go" makes the machine quilting manageable.

I have made several QAYG quilts and I love them! I make whatever block whatever size and quilt as desired. Then I put them together with binding. I do most of the binding by machine and the last back seam by hand. I just finished this quilt the other day and it is a generous queen size.

Georgia Bonesteel is the master of QAYG quilts. Her books are classics and are usually found in public libraries. Not many new quilters know about her. Her quilting show on tv was the best of all the quilt shows then and now. Her method is simple and looks like a quilt that has been quilted whole.
