I'm getting scorching on my fabric. I'm not sure why.

Wondering if the ironing board cover could be the culprit? It's old. It's the "silver" type (teflon?).

doubt it's the iron itself, it's fairly new, not dirty at all. Plus I'm getting scorching even on the wool setting, not just cotton.

the other thought was perhaps it's the water I'm spritzing with? We have hard water (not softened), but I never had that problem before.

So far I haven't "ruined" any of the blocks, but I'm appreciating the extra work I have to do to remove the scorching on the WHITE fabric.

Suggestions?

Your iron may not be working properly. Try a different iron and see.

Even a new iron can malfunction :wink:
Is it possible your fabric is a cotton poly blend? Higher heat would scorch that too :D:D:D

If you think it may be the cover, place a towel over it and use that to iron on. If the scorching stops, it could be the cover.

I would tend to think the iron is too hot, though.

Your thermostat inside the iron may be off.

I have one of those teflon board covers its old to, It also has a what appears to be a diagonal fold of padding, to keep from having a scorched mark on anything I iron I need a thick towel over the area.It doesn't mark the towel, I know its white. but it saves the wear and tear of fabric. You may need to replace your cover. Me money is tigh I would rather buy fabric. Theresse

My iron did not look bad at all but I managed to melt cotton.

If you have a water mark on your board cover, or it is thin, it can and will scorch your fabrics!

Try setting the iron lower and using a different area of the ironing board... also, do NOT steam...it can cause the scorching as well as the water gets too hot!

I found this happened a lot on white on white fabrics...the painted areas get too hot!

I'm wondering if it is your hard water and not scorching at all. I would take a piece of fabric--muslin--and put it over the quilt block, that will protect your fabric. I have hard water and it is pretty orange even with a water softener. Doesn't stain fabrics though.
