My husband wrote a really funny song about down on the farm. I want to male a quilt about the song and include the lyrics. This is a lot of writing. I don’t have great handwriting. Any ideas for getting the lyrics onto the quilt ?

A great way for the two of you to collaborate on this project!
Some ideas, all depending on what sort of a look you want ...

* embroidery, hand or machine
* "write" the words via FMQing onto the quilt
* fabric sheets - you can enter the lyrics into your computer and print on them, just the same as though you were printing it on a piece of paper - the same way that many make their labels

You might even want to include the musical notes, so others could sing the tune!


You really have me curious as to the words ... care to share?

One other idea is to have Spoonflower print the lyrics onto fabric for you. Most methods of printing them yourself will result in fading over time.

That is a special project! Look for a counted cross stitch book with the alphabet. You can design your own.

You could use your printer and pick any font. I haven't use this product but saw it used in projects at a quilt show.

I have used my embroidery machine and made a book with song lyrics.

I made a christmas quilt and did the plain blocks with my favorite holiday songs.
I played around until I had a font and size I wanted and then printed out the song on regualr white papr.
Then I put the paper on my little light table and traced. It was perfect!

I did it first time with the parts of this chicken quilt. It is only scary the first time

You can also use a printer to print on fabric. Just be sure to use pigment-based ink (because it is water insoluble). There are a number of different manufacturers of paper-backed fabric specifically for use in printers. Electricquilt.com has one of the best, but there are other very good ones too; check Amazon.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think trying to FMQ or embroider all those words be quite difficult. If I’m looking for something that can be washed spoonflower may be the way to go. If I make sure it’s a wall hanging the other methods would be better.

The dog got bit by a rattlesnake, the cat has got the heaves,
The cow got out of the pasture and is eating loco weed.
Some men from the government came tramping through the hills.
They didn’t find the cash crop,but they broke up all the stills.

With words like that, you might want to do a separate block for each, combining the words with a relevant picture, either drawn, cut from fabric, or pieced.

Breaking it down that way, the embroidery would seem less of a chore and really add to the fun of the whole quilt and song.
