I told a friend I would finish up a quilt her mother started. I'm a beginner quilter, but I have finished several baby quilts and they all came out fine. She had was a bag of hand quilted squares. My problem is they already have backing material on them? At first I thought I could just add sashing and it would be an easy fix but that's not going to work because the back of the fabric would show. Am I making any sense? So the squares are 9 patch on the front, with batting & backing fabric and were hand quilted.

Any suggestions?

Yup - sounds like a Qayg (Quilt as you go).

There are several methods. One question - Is the backing larger than the front? or are they the same size?

If they are the same size - you will need to add something like bias tape or straight fabric strips to attach them together - there is a tute right here. She used something like steam a seam on the back and then sewed them down. It gives good pictures.

In another method ( if the backing is larger than the front is), you sew the backings tog along where the batting ends so that the raw edges can be brought up and over the batting and front of the block - and then stitched down. Here is a link to that method
