I love the traditional. I love the reproductions. I love the civil war. And, being a longarm quilter I am beginning to love the modern. However, I wonder why they are called 'modern' , as my Mother who passed away in 1994, made quilts that looked like these "modern" quilts back in the 80's.

Would have to say I never met a quilt I didn't like. My taste leans much more towards the simplicity and clean lines of the "modern" quilts. My kids would probable like them better too. Problem is, I don't think they would be as much fun to make as the more complex, colorful quilts.

I'm going to sign up for a sashiko class next weekend. It is something I would not normally go for but I'm challenging myself. So yes, it's a good thing that we have so many creative outlets and inspirations.

Traditional Quilter

I go for the Traditional patterns and fabric. Love both 30's patterns and fabric. I tend to lean toward quilts that have a white or off white background with controlled colors. Love to do applique and someday I'll finish my Baltimore Album. I l prefer planned quilting rather than the meandering quilting done on so many modern quilts.

I like traditional pieced and modern pieced, not applique. I like geometrics, don't like florals, either in fabric or pieced designs, except for a very few pieced stylized floral designs. I like the modern colors, geometrics, and tesselations of Jinny Beyer's quilts, but not the floral borders. I'm not crazy about the historical reproduction fabrics. I like modern colors better. All of this being said, I've still done a number of appliqued quilts, particularly for baby quilts.

I like using traditional patterns with a modern twist....a log cabin in blacks and white. I usually stick to more traditional quilting. There are no quilt police so do what makes you happy.

Traditional patterns are my favorite; but I enjoy trying different styles. Isn't it wonderful that we have such a variety of quilting patterns!

I've always gravitated towards buying traditional and studying traditional, but I make 'unruly' types, and utilitarian. At this point in time, that's where I'm at. I love it when things look off balance and I love working by hand, no machines. I do like the open space in modern quilts but I like all quilts like I like all flowers, they all bring a beauty to my life that can't be replaced.

I did traditonal quilting for many years and kind of got out of quilting until I started seeing modern quilts. They piqued my interest and got me excited about quilting again. I still like traditional style but prefer doing modern for now. I love looking at all of them though. I can appreciate a beautiful quilt whatever the style.
