Using selvedges for mug rugs

Default Using selvedges for mug rugs
Can anyone help me out with this? I would like to use selvedges to make some mug rugs but have no idea how to even start. How far into the fabric should I cut the selvedge? Sew onto batting? Should I sew these on right through to the backing?
