I struggle with precisely piecing Hunter's Star diamonds to the half-hexagon shape. I admit it. However, I really, really want a beautiful Hunter's Star quilt for the wall in my sewing room.....so yesterday I picked up the new American Patchwork and Quilting and there is Hunter's Star, with a different technique. Basically you cut the big triangles and raw-edge applique the diamonds on, no piecing required!

So here's my question: I love batiks....has anybody every used them for raw-edge applique? If you have, I'd love to hear your experiences and even see pictures if possible!

It seems like they would work pretty well as they are more tightly woven and a little stiffer than regular quilting cottons. I'm on a tight budget, though, and don't want to go buy a bunch of batiks for this if I'm not sure they will work well and especially wash well. Thanks so much in advance!!!!!!

I haven't done raw edge applique with batiks, but quilt with them more often than other fabrics...they don't ravel as much. I would think if I was doing raw edge, I'd prefer to use the batiks for that reason. The others always look so cute when they are made, but I didn't care for how they were after a couple of washes.

Do you have any that you can do up a sample with and wash a few times to see if you like the results?

Raw edge applique works great with Batiks. It's all I use. The weave is so fine, there's not a problem.

​Batiks are my favourite for raw edge appliqué. They have much less fraying than regular cotton so the design stays nice longer.

Personally, I would go for the HST method over doing the raw edge applique. I saw the same magazine article.

Batiks are the best possible fabrics for raw edge appliqué. In addition to having a tighter weave/higher thread count which virtually eliminates any fraying, the dye penetration also eliminates that nasty white edge that shows when printed fabrics are used.

I agree 100% with Dunster....i am ROTTEN at diamonds....ALL my Hunter's Star blocks are made the HST way - and they look great if i do say so myself.

I just made a Hunter's Star quilt using the HST method and it went together so easily and quickly. I found a tutorial at cascadequilts.com but just tried to google that site and they are working on redesigning it. Anyway, each block was made up of 8 HSTs and 2 squares. If I can be of any help let me know.
