For the last couple of days I have been raking my brain as how to downsize quilt patterns. It seems ok as long as I don't include triangles. No matter what program I work with, the result is terrible. Now I was told to add 7/8 inch to my squares I am cutting into triangles. Haven't tried this yet. My question: Is there a book, cd, youtube picturia for problems like this. I am desperate now LOL Seems I just need to figure it out - thank you Karin

If you are reducing the size in patchwork, just using percentages should be the easies route. For half-size, multiply sizes by .5, 75% multiply by .75

stick with nice round numbers and make up shortfalls with wider borders.

Most patterns break down into sub-units of 3-4-5-6- across and tall. Resize each proportionately. If you are using a classic pattern, chances are good that other sizes have already been published. What block are you talking about?

If you purchase a quilting program like EQ, you can resize any block to any size. Of course some blocks work better at some sizes than others. It will give you rotary cutting directions, template or paper pieced patterns. Some blocks done work well for paper piecing.

Judy Martin's book KNOCKOUT BLOCKS AND SAMPLER QUILTS explains all of the math formulas you need to accurately cut all kinds of blocks, squares, triangles, rectangles. she teaches you how to re-size any pattern piece when you know the formulas. check her web site she may have free content that helps too.
