fabric used on totes, shopping bags etc. The fabric looks like fabric with a coating brushed on. I went to a fabric shop, but I really don't know what to ask for. I believe they just started to use this type material within the last year or so. Now do I have everyone confused??

I know what you're talking about, but I'm not sure what it's called, either. I did a search and found that there's oilcloth, pvc-coated, and vinyl-coated fabrics. I've found it in several of my LQSes.

Are you looking for oil cloth? It's a kind of laminated fabric for lunch totes and that sort of thing.

I bought some vinyl coated cotton. It's very soft and feels like fabric but waterproof. Not as heavy as oilcloth. It's pricey but so worth it.

I'm 65 and we made "sit upon's" out of oil cloth when I was in grade school and in Girl Scouts.

I use jeans and twills and heavy drapery fabric and such for my shopping bags. Usually find some cheap one place or another.
