I've never used Retayne, but from what I've read, you're only supposed to wash the fabric in cold water after use because of the way the product works in swelling the dye molecules to make it physically less able to bleed.

I live in AZ, and during the summer months, the "cold" water that comes out of my faucet is a similar temperature as my warm water during the winter.

Could anyone provide feedback on on how much things bleed if you accidentally wash Retayne-treated fabrics in warm water instead of cold? If it bleeds much, I might as well skip it.

I've only used Retayne once & then when I read on the bottle that it contains a known carcinogenic (sp?) and had a warning for the State of California, I decided that vinegar & cold water will do the same job for me.

You can use warm water, just not hot water, for Retayne treated fabrics.

The "known carcinogen" found in Retayne is a small amount of formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is also found in fire retardant, waterproof and permanent press fabrics, clothing, cosmetics, furniture, carpeting, draperies, plywood, particle board, adhesines, disinfectants, and many other things that you probably come into contact with every day.

Yes, if you use Retayne, please be sure to wash it entirely out before giving the quilt to a child (or using it yourself!) It's probably safe if it's just for a wall quilt.

Never heard of it before!
I guess I will stick with vinegar, hot water, cold water or all of the before metioned.

Salt and vinegar were ways to set organic dyes years ago. Today most fabric is dyed using chemical dyes, so salt and vinegar seldom work.

Thanks for everyone's input. I was busy, it got late, and I just washed the fabric 6 or 7 times until the water was crystal clear...or I was sleepy enough to call it "clear". :D

Hi - I have used retayne many times with great results. Use it in HOT water - Don't let it sit in the washer - colors can run together. When the washer cycle is done, dry it immediately. Good luck!
