Reverse applique and painted quilts

I was at JoAnn's yesterday browsing the quilt books. They had "Skinny Quilts and Table Toppers" that had a dainty reverse applique runner. Anyone ever done reverse applique?
Another book - can't remember the title - used colored pencils and paints to add color. Beautiful results, but I don't paint so I was wondering if someone with limited painting experience has tried this and what they thought.
I quilt so much more in my mind... :roll:

I've done a little reverse applique, but it seemed so much more long winded and complicated compared to regular applique, and I still can't quite see the point. I've only done a little colouring too. That was with a quilt kit I bought from Australia. They supplied colouring pencils which I used to fill in some areas I had embroidered. I was pleased with the effect, but I have never seen the pencils for sale anywhere else, so came to a halt after that.

i've done reverse applique but its never my go to style for applique.
i do add paint to my quilts and i would never consider myself a painter.
i use it to enhance existing design elements already present in the fabric.
i also use stencils, rubber stamps, and rubbing plates with paint.
i guess i would say i use paints in the same fashion as a scrapbooker instead of like a traditional painter.

I have'nt did that, but I did do a throw pillow with crayons. I stamped picturw to a white cotton square ,(a vintage picture of a lady with a hat on) and colored with crayola crayons the hat, ribbon, flowers etc, and then embroidery around it all. Sold it at my gift shop and now people are asking for more,
I thought about doing a quilt with squares like this . We'll see.
To do this you just stamp the pattern on your fabric, color the parts you want collored. Place a brown paper bag down ,lay a piece of waxed paper on it and lay your square face down on the wax paper and iron. That sets the crayons . Then you can embroidery the rest of it. Different....
