Default Selecting thread when logarm sewing

When you have a quilt with several colors on the front and for instance a dark print, such as navy, on the back, how do you decide what color thread to use. Do you use the same color on the front and back or match the back for instance. Do you always use the same color in the top and bobbin thread? I will soon be quilting on the LA one that is red, black and green on the front and large blocks of these colors on the back. I am curious what some of you do about this issue.

I try to find a variagated, but it seems that the color of the thread never falls on the fabric that matches :-) but I think the overall look is good. King tut has a red/green and a red/black. I also use the same color in top and bottom, regardless of the color of the backing fabric. The tension on my machine is pretty good, but I really don't want to stress about the top thread poking up on the back, or vice versa.

Just about every quilt has an assortment of color in it except for whole cloth quilts. Choose a color that pulls the top together. On a lot of quilts I use a grey tone which seems to draw color to itself and refects the color that it is on. In most cases I work to suite the top not the back of a quilt. There are few exceptions to this choice.
I usually use same thread in top and bobbin. If a quilt is darker I use a darker color and if lighter ...

I try not to have a light top and dark back or reverse. This just complicates the work.

Remember that using the same thread in both top & bobbin hides a multitude of problems.

EDIT: Remember there are no absolutes and thread doesn't have to match everything. What color is the majority of the quilt, red, green or black? This may be a good place to start.

Can you post a pic of the top?
