Default Press Seam Open or to One Side on Backing?

I usually fold the seam to one side when I am piecing blocks. I'm wondering if I should press the seam open on the back? How do you do it?

For the backing I usually take a bigger seam and yes press it open so it lays flat. Not sure either way is wrong, however.

I believe most quilters press the back seam open. With larger seam as indicated above.

I press open, the flatter seam will help it to be not so obvious.

I always press the seam open, its easier sewing further that way, no bumps.

Okay done... 1/2-inch seam pressed open. I don't know why I never thought of it before. Maybe inexperience?

It sure is hard ironing left handed. I'm recovering from shoulder surgery on my right side, and I'm not allowed to pick up the iron with my right hand.

Yes, I too always make a 1/2" seam and press open, when piecing a backing. Sorry about your should, hope it heals soon.

I try not to do seams on my backs but if I have to, I press the larger seam open. I usually give it a good starching as well. Nothing I hate worse than holding up a light coloured quilt in front of a light or window and see that the seam allowance has wandered.

The lady who just quilted my last project for me told me to press my seam to one side. I have no idea if there's a "right" way. I'm just putting this info into the conversation.
