I used to use a single thread but now it's almost always machine done.

A long time ago, I was told to use single thread when hemming pants because the double thread can rub against each other and break easier. Don't know if thats true or not. But if it is, binding with a single cotton quilting thread is all that is necessary.

Single thread, 40wt cotton handquilting thread, blind stitching about ⅛" apart. Has lasted 40 years so far on one quilt I have.

Never thought of using a double thread. I use a single thread but I think I will use a double thread next time.

I use single thread. I had to snip one apart not long ago to repair something. snipped one thread thinking I could pull it apart to have enought room to make repair..... not on your life, I had to rip out inches, It was in there strong as could be.

I usually use quilting thread a single strand and it holds very well. I have a quilting friend that uses silk thread.
