I have wood, love it If you pull up the carpet and have concrete, painted concrete is in style now. If you have wood, I would not replace it, clean and wax and see how it looks.

the ideal flooring would be cork: softens the blows for those irons that get knocked off, is hypoallergenic, helps keep the room an even temperature, is easily rolled upon in a sewing chair, the threads etc can be swept up and it is easy to clean. If i couldn't afford that then i'd go some other kind of hard texture with area rugs for the quilting buddies to sleep upon while they keep me company.

We have faux wood! Actually, it's but looks like wood, because I have so many allergies, including dust! Find the vinyl so easy to clean. No special treatment and no worries if scissors drop, etc.

I took over a spare bedroom and lined the outer walls with my sewing machines and tubs...the middle of my floor is for laying out my quilt...it's a carpeted floor..but it's no different than when I had to move furniture in the living room for this same process of putting the quilt top together for quilting....

It is true pins hide in the carpet. Then they stab me in the feet sometimes.

Since my sewing room is off the garage- its cement , which I just love; no more pins in the carpet!

I have laminate in my sewing room but carpet under the quilting machine where I stand for long periods and mostly because it is in the family room. I really prefer the wood. For pins and thread and the wheels on my chair. And so much easier to clean.

DO NOT replace carpet, even cement is better, easier to clean!
