Yes, yes, yes! I love using my leftovers on the backs! I'm not a scrapper, so it let's me use every last piece and not feel guilty for wasting fabric!

But how would you quilt it since the design most likely would not line up its positions with the front?

I'd keep the fabric for another quilt top.
Too pretty for a backing.
I like to use larger pieces of fabric with as few seams as possible for quilt backings. Less seams to pull out.
And if the backing isn't exactly straight your blocks will be crooked.
But its your quilt, do as you like. :D
