Hello,

I have numerous ribbons from dog shows and want to make a quilt for each venue instead of leaving then in boxes. Anyway, what size needle would you use to machine quilt them ? And what type of stitch and should I use batting or just sew them to backing ? I am making wall hangings out of them, they probably could cover a whole wall.

Thank you, Sharon

Hi Sharon,

Welcome.

As soon as I read your post I immediately remembered a fabulous quilt posted a while back that a member made for her daughter using a gazillion horse & dog show ribbons.

Maybe you can get some ideas.

It was made by grannyoquilting:

Thank you,
I did see that but it didn't say how it was made. I don't want to ruin the ribbons with the wrong needles. Do you think I should get pre quilted fabric for the back ? I think a website called quilting cove has alot of pictures but doesn't say how, she does these quilts for income..

Hi Sharon,

Why don't you send grannyoquilting a PM (Private Message) and ask her how she did it?

Just go back to her thread and click on her name. Then click on SEND PM (it will be in blue) and just type in your message.
You can include the link to this thread.

It looks like she posts every couple of days so I'm sure you'll get an answer shortly.

When she answers you, there will be a YELLOW bar around the Private Message option at the top of each page. When you see that, just click on it and you'll be able to view her response.

Your best bet is to contact grannyoquilting.
Or even call quiltingcove. Explain you're a quilter, and just ask her what needle she used and if she had any problems with the ribbon material. You're not her competition. ;-)

Quiltingcove had a lot of good ideas for the layout. But I don't think they used pre-quilted material. Actually some don't even look like they have batting. Or any quilting.

Good luck!

Hi, I made the ribbon quilt and DGD made one for herself for 4-H recently. We used a smaller needle. Took each ribbon and cut them all the same size. You will have to figure out what size best suits your ribbons. Then lay them out to a design,(we used them all in a row across) that you like. Sew each one together and make an assemble line with this as it does take some time to sew them all together. I do use batting under the ribbons to give them some definition as they lay pretty flat and undementional otherwise. Find a non tradition backing, not cotton to go on the back. I used a rather shiney back for DD's and DGD is using nylon fabric for making flags. We will use that to bind it with also. Just stitch in the ditch unless you add photos to yours too. Then stitch around in that design. Good luck let me know how you do. Here are the two of ours.

Make sure you save the top of the ribbons( the rosettes) to sew on later when you are done. Have fun with this.
