I shipped a Pfaff machine once...I had that thing padded inside the case outside the case and added more even once I thought it was good enough...I paid insurance on it even though the customer didn't ask for it (to save myself in case something happened).

Any good seller should want to ensure the delivery arrives safely...just arriving is not good enough...it's got to arrive intact.

According to this seller's selling/shipping policy, I would have to be responsible for paying to ship it back.
By purchasing this item, in essence I agreed to his policy.

He has offered to refund me $8.00.

I'm over it.
Time to move on.

Just because they post that doesn't mean ebay/paypal will agree with the seller.

File your claim thru ebay and/or paypal and request the full amount...don't give up that easy...

AND DON"T AGREE TO HIS OFFER...OTHERWISE you can't file a claim

I agree. I believe you should let ebay/paypal know of the circumstances and the sellers response. You should not have to pay for this mess, and disappointment. Good Luck.

I had already accepted it when I posted.

Lesson learned.
ALWAYS ASK for insurance!

The way I figure it.. I paid $8.25 for the machine itself.
Either way, I'd have had to pay for shipping.

DD4 will enjoy the machine just as much with or without a case. :)

It doesn't matter what the seller's conditions are, or whether you insured it or not, they only apply when he has done everything right and you have received your item in good condition.

He did not do everything right, he did a lousy packing job assuming the case would be ok, poor assumption on his part. And your not insuring it does not absolve him of the responsibility of packing properly.

At least that's my opinion. I would notify Ebay and get their take on this, I bet they'll side with you and your request for a refund.

I once purchased a glass item on Ebay, I requested insurance. When I received the box I didn't open it because when I picked it up I could hear the shattered glass clinking around inside the box, AND the gal forgot to insure it. She reimbursed me all my money, including shipping, no problem.

If you are happy with the outcome, that is all that matters.

As a buyer on ebay, I only had one instance where I had the same type of issue...I learned the hard way too.

Once I became a seller, I made sure to wise up and read all the rules before selling.

Accoridng to eBay, sellers cannot ASK you to pay for insurance, nor charge you for it. Getting you the item is the sellers responsability. Do what you wish, but you can file a calim and win, ya know.

Insurance is to protect the Seller. Not the Buyer. It IS their job to get the item to you safely.

Ok.. update.

The seller now says he is unable to issue a partial refund.
I've now resorted to opening a case with ebay.

Information sent in ebay claim:
The sewing machine case arrived damaged although the machine itself is unharmed.
We mutually agreed on a partial refund on the item of $8 (the purchase price was $16.25.)
He now says that he is unable to do a partial refund due to PayPal limitations.
I suggested that he send the $8 refund directly to my PayPal account.
The seller now says that I need to return the item for a full refund, however I will have to pay the return shipping.
This is for my 4 year old daughter who has now seen the machine and is anxious to sew on it.
Please assist the seller in honoring our $8 refund agreement.
I had made peace with this.. now I'm just irritated all over again.
*UGH!*
