I am new here and I have some done some small wall hangings. I would like to make a small quilt for my friends GD since she is getting a new baby sister in a few months. Should the fabric I use on the back of the quilt be some where on the top of the quilt? Or does it just have to be something that goes together? Thanks for your help!

There is no rule, you can use something totally different but still matches maybe one of the colors or you can use some fabric from the front and some other fabrics.

I have seen nice quilts with all of the above backings and they all turned out great.

What I like to do personally is to put something that "goes" with the front (may or may not actually be a fabric on the front) if the quilt will be seen on both sides (bed quilt or throw), but if it's a wallhanging, I use muslin because it's cheaper. But then again, as you hear so often around here, there are no quilt police! :-) Do what works for you!

If it's going to be a wall quilt you really don't have to worry about the backing. I use muslin for wall quilts.
