Ok all you experts...
what is the best combination of backing and batting for a flannel quilt if I want to keep it light. I don't want to make it look like I skimped, but if I back in similar fabric, it would be so heavy, wouldn't it? And what about batting - I just picture a quilt so heavy it would suffocate the poor little guy under from the weight.

Should it be tied? Wouldn't that be lighter than quilting? Can it be one of those flip inside out things to finish? Never worked with flannel....

thanks...it is about 90 today, so I think I will plan and wait until the heat wave breaks, so I have time to work it out :)

I made a flannel quilt using flannel on the front and as backing and used regular Quilters Dream Blend (70/30) for the batting. It was not too heavy. My son loved the weight of it.

I made flannel quilts... front and back.....for my 2 ggs's in Ohio. They had a light poly and cotton batting...they weren't too heavy....Just be sure to wash the flannel a couple of times before you use it!!

For my flannel rag quilts I use polyester batting , light and fluffy :thumbup:

I make flannel baby quilts all the time for family and friends. For babies born in the late spring/summer months, I use flannel for the front, backing, and I use it for the batting. It quilts really nice and isn't too heavy at all. For all the winter quilts, I do use warm & natural batting to give the blankets a little more warmth. :)

I made several light weight flannel quilts a few weeks ago.
just used flannel on front and back no batting

I made a flannel quilt (56" x 72") using flannel for both the top and backing and polyester batting. I don't think it's any heavier than any other quilt. I even hand quilted it. I thought it was going to be a problem but it turned out to be so easy to quilt.

I've made about a dozen flannel raggy quilts. The first one I used a batting and it was too heavy. The others I used flannel front and back and no batting. These were plenty heavy enough.

I've not made a regular flannel quilt...just the raggy ones. My opinion may not work for a non-raggy one.
