I went to my favorite quilting store looking for a new project, I asked one of the ladies in the shop for alittle advice on picking my next project. I had explained to her my level of experience. She directed me to a quilt kit with all triangles. And I have never made a quilt with triangles because I read so many disaster stories about them.

In a "goofball" moment I said sure, I can do that. The pattern is on the cover of McCall's Quilting, Fast Favorites.

I have started cutting the strips from fat quarters that were provided in the kit. I just can't get motivated to work on it. I feel intimidated with the whole quilt by my own inexperience.

Also, at the time I was in the shop purchasing the above, I signed up for a quilt class on you guessed it triangles, the entire class was surprised to find the class was hand piecing triangles. I don't hand piece and I do not believe anyone else in the class does either.

DH was with me when I bought the kit and the book, he knows what it cost and never complains. Maybe I need to put everything away, get ready for spring, and get back to the gym.

Thanks for letting me vent/whine a bit. :cry:

Hi Julie, maybe just put it away for awhile and work on something more fun for you. You can always go back to it.

Losing your status of regular probably means you are getting stuff done :) That's too bad about the quilt and class. I know from finishing some of my mil's projects that if you don't like the colors/fabrics, it makes the work harder! She also hand pieced and I didn't want to so I used my machine and mixed them up- it turned out fine! Maybe you could do this?

I agree - put it away and then when you get more proficient on triangles it will seem easy peasy.

I do triangles with "Thangles". Look these up and see if this is something that would help you. I could go back to the LQS and they would get me started on anything that I am not confident in. Put it away for awhile if you want to, but don't wait too long to get back to it.

Hate to say it but your LQS sounds like they needed bodies in the class..... Next time say ,that you will think about it.... then you can read about what the class has to offer.....

Have you actually tried the triangles yet? Or are you just letting what you've heard intimidate you?

I know I was very intimidated by set-in seams because everyone says how hard they are and tries to find ways around them, but once I tried a few, I found they're not that hard, and some of the prettiest patterns have set-in seams.

Are the triangles in your pattern half-square triangles, quarter square, or other?

From what you've described, I think I would start visiting another LQS. The fact that a class features hand piecing should be clearly stated. If you really don't want to do the triangles, can you use the fabric from the quilt to make something you're more comfortable with?

I think the best way to get better is to push yourself, if you stay away from triangles because you're scared of them how will you ever know if you can conquer them? I say jump in with both feet and give it a try, don't expect your first time to be perfect, was anything ever? meal? cake? drive? diaper change? it all takes practice. go for it.you CAN do it :thumbup:

I agree with putting everything away for now and doing something else that brings you joy!

I'm also going to advocate for keeping the hand-piecing class. I am doing some hand piecing now for the first time since Girl Scouts and it's amazing how much better I'm getting to know my 1/4" seam, stitch length, the feel of the fabric, being on/off grain, sewing curves...basically I feel like I'm a lot closer to the process. I can see where if you were intimidated by triangles, a hand-piecing class would be an awesome way to learn!!
