Default Sometimes it is good to throw out the rules

A girl that has quilted several years for 4-H used my frame and sewing machine set up to finish her quilt for the county fair. She showed up with "extra loft'" batting in a bag. I refrained from saying something as the she was on a deadline to get it done. It was a "scrappy" batiks that were very bright and busy. She used a very tight free motion "loop and swirl" I have to say the effect was really cool. I think with the fabric choice and the tight quilting the batting choice really worked. I have some batting like that tucked away, and am going to try it. You would not want to use it on just anything, but a bright, busy quilt, for a young girl, or a baby quilt, it would look great. I just thought I would share that with this group, in case you had those bags of batting, and did not know what to do with them.

Did you have a chance to feel the quilt after it was done? I'm thinking that lots of quilting on a high loft batting is likely to result in a stiff quilt. I like my quilts to be thin, soft, and drapeable.

Did you get any pictures? What did the judges at the fair say about it?

It was not stiff, I did not get pictures, and she was grand champion and it will be judged in the "Champion of Champions" for the eastern part of state of 4-H. I will try to get some pictures.

Sounds delightful! Do want to see pictures...of this lovely young lady and her winning quilt!

And I love soft and fluffy, so I usually do minimum quilting with the high loft batting. Will be interested in seeing it done a different way.
