Help please. I have some blocks that are 3 3/4 square. I would like to do a square in a square. How do I figure out what size to make the block to cut triangles for these blocks. I'm brain dead or it is on vacation without me (lol). Thanks, Icee

I read somewhere that you need to add 1 1/4" to the size of a square to make the size of block you are wanting.

Is the 3 3/4 square the center of a larger square or the finished size?

The 3 3/4 will be the center of the square.

Now you've given me hives. I hate square in a square. I just had to make about 50 of them and I'm not a happy person. Good luck with yours, I'm sure they'll be way better than mine were.

I imagine you are very well aware of this technique, so please understand I mean no insult by this... however, since some of us are still "newbies", I would like to mention that square in a square are really not hard to put together if you mark the centers and match them up before sewing. Hope this helps someone!

Browngirl, lay your 3 3/4 block on your ruler. Count the inches going accross the diagonal of your block and you will get 4 inches.
Cut you block at four inches and then cut across the diagonal for two tri's.

cut from paper to make sure first.....mark your new tri's in the center, mark you block in the center and match the two and sew. Be careful and pin so as not to stretch the diagonal tri...sew the tri's on the block side if you are not experience with diagonals..

ever tried doing the tube method? You sew two 2 1/2 strips together and press open. Then sew a 4 1/2 inch strip, right sides together, to the other strip and cut at 45 deg angles. opens up to a half square triangle that when sewn together can become square in a square en point. Missouri Quilt co. has a good video on youtube.
