Steam Iron Problem

I just found a really good deal on a Rowenta Iron at a garage sale. The lady had it marked $2 but didn't know if it would drip water or not but she said I could have it for $1 so I purchased it. Now, I really, really like this iron mainly because it doesn't have the automatic shutoff but I used water in it today and occasionally it would drip water onto the fabric. Why is it doing that? Do I not have the steam set right for the fabric setting. I had the steam setting in the middle and the fabric setting for cotton. Anyone know why irons drip water or in some cases they just spew the water out.

i haven't put water in an iron in years...they all start leaking, spitting and spewing after awhile and i got tired of having to replace them. now i keep a spray bottle on the end of the ironing board and my iron is WONDERFUL! and i got mine for $12 at wally world 4 years ago :) my $139 iron lasted about 4 months
