How about a 4 patch square within a square?
It uses short strips and triangles ....and looks very fancy!

Hi to all,

thanks so much for suggestions I finally decided on one using half square triangles, someone suggested that it looked like sailboats, but I could not picture how that would work. Anyway at my quilting class on Friday one of the other ladies had an old quilting magazine in to show us and on one of the pages was a quilt that someone had made using half square triangles and rectangles so I had a look at the block and mocked up a 12 inch finished block. I decided to alternate the blocks with a 12 plain block. I am making a 5 x 6 block quilt but have not decided on whether to put a border on or just bind it. So far I have completed 2 blocks cut out 5 plain blocks and hopefully today will complete another 3 blocks. Obviously I overestimated my speed in cutting and sewing so no way will I finish it this weekend but am hoping to get the top done this weekend and quilt it next. I will post a picture of the blocks and/or completed quilt if my son comes to visit cos I don't know how to get pictures onto my computer!

have just been reading today's messages and Emmah is commenting on "i am so envious" if you look at her avatar you will see the block I am making.

Thankyou for your kind comments! I made 5 different quilts from the same 6" squares! It was fun finding different patterns for each one!1 They all go to injured UK soldiers! I would love to see yours when its done!

go to quiltville.com and check out her "crayon box" pattern, I did that one with mens shirts. I just got back from the thrift store on my lunch hour and bought 6 more shirts. I'm doing a 8 1/2 square block , ten in a row
and I'm alternating it with a tumbler block done in rows.
I'll post once I'm finished. Then I'm thinking I'm going to cut the labels from the yokes into 4 in blocks and make a border, I love the labels.

Thanks for suggestion have checked out pattern and it is really nice, I have already started the quilt for my brother, hoped to have it finished by now but I always over estimate my speed (and skills).

I think I will save the crayon box pattern as one I would like to do (will add it to the list along with countless others).

Hope to finish quilt by Wed 1st of June as that is when I will be seeing my brother again. I will post pictures and once again thanks for all the suggestions.

I'm working with a friend to make a blanket for her from her dad's shirts. We're going to do the TURNING 20 design. Later she wants to make one from her late hubby's shirts. I may try to talk her into trying the 10 minute block.
